Blind Couple Marries After Their Guide Dogs Become Inseparable

Blind Couple Marries After Their Guide Dogs Become Inseparable
A Lifetime Of Double Dates Ahead!

Prepare the Kleenex, for this is maybe the cutest story ever. Back in 2012, Claire Johnson and Mark Gaffey, who are both blind, met after they each signed up to be paired with seeing-eye companions at a guide dog training program in the UK. For two weeks, they worked extensively with their Labrador retrievers, Venice and Rodd, and during that time, the dogs developed a deep fondness for each other. “The trainers said that it was the romance of the course, the two dogs,” says Claire in the video above. “They’d always pull towards one another, ignore all the other dogs.” Venice and Rodd’s burgeoning relationship led Claire and Mark to spend more and more time together on doggie playdates, and sure enough, soon romance began to blossom between them as well. Last weekend, Claire and Mark were married, with their dogs/matchmakers acting as ring bearers during the ceremony.

“I have no doubt that our guide dogs brought us together and helped me find my true love,” says Claire. “Much like our two guide dogs, we really are best friends and soul mates.” Cutest foursome ever. [The Dodo]

Harold and Ruth Knapke were childhood friends who started a romantic correspondence while Harold, known as “Doc,” served in the army during World War II. The wartime flirtation turned into a real-life relationship when Doc returned (as Ruth put it, “I let him chase me until I caught him!”), and the couple were soon married. During their 65-year marriage, they raised 6 children together, tended to their Ohio farm, and remained hopelessly devoted to each other. Earlier this month, days before their 66-year anniversary, Doc died in the nursing home room they shared. Eleven hours later, so did Ruth. Doc and Ruth had both been ailing, but the couple’s children believe Doc went first “as a final act of love.” “We believe he wanted to accompany her out of this life and into the next one, and he did,” their daughter explained. “It is really just a love story,” said another daughter. “They were so committed and loyal and dedicated, they weren’t going to go anywhere without the other one.” [Dayton Daily News]

Girl Talk: The Anatomy Of A Failed Relationship

If you are the hopeless romantic type, this story might appeal to you. Alternately, if you are the jaded, anti-love breakup schadenfreude type, this story might appeal to you, too. This is about the last time I fell over-the-top in love, and the really terrible way it ended. Keep reading »

Paternity Test Reunites Couple After 23 Years Apart

A couple in England was reunited recently after over 23 years apart when the woman tracked down the man to give a DNA sample for a paternity test. Sarah Daniels, 42, showed up at Roy Cook’s door after ending their brief eight-month romance 23 years earlier. She was 17 the last time she saw him and pregnant with his baby, although she didn’t know that at the time. She moved quickly to a new relationship and when a pregnancy test came up positive, she assumed her new dude was the daddy. That guy split after baby Danny was born and a few years ago when he reappeared in their lives, Sarah realized there were no physical similarities between the two men. That’s when she remembered Roy and decided to track him down. Keep reading »

The Weirdest Love Stories Of 2010

Despite having the most information (ever) at our fingertips and the greatest likelihood (ever) of being caught and made an object of public scorn and ridicule for doing dumb things, we are living in an age of people doing really dumb stuff. Sure, people have always done super ridiculous stuff (like creating the Anglican church) but, somewhere between “Say Anything” and “Jackass,” we started making a bunch of questionable calls about love and relationships. Here are the most interesting things we learned from the past year’s worth of weird news. Keep reading »

Watch The Story Of Danny And Annie

Get your tissues ready for this one. StoryCorps, an organization that records and archives people’s stories, has started broadcasting animated shorts of some of those stories on a PBS show called “POV.” This one, called “Danny and Annie,” is the tearjerker tale of “Brooklynites Danny, an OTB clerk, and Annie, a nurse,” [who] remember their life together—from their first date to Danny’s final days with terminal cancer.” It’s a reminder of how fleeting life is and how lucky we are if we can find someone to love and share the ride with. 81-Year-Old Sweethearts Reunite After 62 Years

Well, my eye makeup is ruined. This is the story of Jack, an 81-year-old widowed veteran, en route to see his high school sweetheart, who he hasn’t seen in over 60 years. Recently back in touch, the two have been talking on the phone and have exchanged photos. “She hasn’t aged well,” he says, “but I don’t care.” Jack is so nervous about seeing Betty again that he took a Valium before his flight; luckily, his seat mate was there to calm him down and capture his joyful reunion on film. Maybe I’m just hormonal, but I bawled. Old people in wheelchairs, madly in love — there is hope for us all! Keep reading »

And The Prize Goes To … Our Favorite Story Of First Love

Last Friday, we asked you to share your story of first love in exchange for a copy of Us: Americans Talk About Love. Well, a ton of you sent in amazing tales of how you knew you were in love for the first time. We laughed, we cried, and then we decided reader Erin’s story was our favorite:

I was 18 years old. It was the second semester of my first year of college, and I had somehow managed to snag my high school mega-crush. I had always had a thing for him, but thought he was way too cool for me, so his interest in me had come as quite the surprise.  A few months after we started dating, we were hanging out at my parents house, petting my cat.  We ended up sprawled out across my dining room floor, talking and laughing.  I said something silly and we started laughing uncontrollably, to the point where we were both crying, and we were trying our hardest to stop but just couldn’t contain ourselves.  It was then, in the moment that we were coming down and wiping our eyes, that I realized I was in love with him.  Here was this person, so different and separate from me, who I’d always put on a pedestal and tried to be so cool around…and we were curled up under my dinner table with a cat, peeing ourselves laughing about a joke a 6-year-old could make. Somehow, he had morphed from an unattainable entity to a part of me, someone who saw and cherished my truest self.

Don’t forget to enter this week’s contest. The winner gets “Secret Diary of A Call Girl” seasons one and two on DVD and more! Keep reading »

Win This! Us: Americans Talk About Love

Love is one of those things that’s hard to describe and even harder to understand. We can’t really know what love is until we’re in it, and the love between two people is unique, so even if you’ve been in love, you’ll never understand another couple’s relationship. Us: Americans Talk About Love lets us peek into strangers’ love lives with 44 stories collected by social anthropologist John Bowe. As told by a homeless thirtysomething, a married aerobics instructor who fell for a woman, a senior who still smooches her husband on a regular basis, a brokenhearted man who has dated more than 300 women since his wife’s death, and more, these oral reports from across the United States prove that love is anything but uniform. 6 Heartwarming Stories Of Old Love From 2009

The bad things that happen in the world tend to stick in our minds a little more than the good stuff, which is unfortunate, because a lot of wonderful things happened in 2009. Even more heartwarming than stories about young people falling in love are ones about older people who are still in love or reunited with a childhood crush. There’s something really special about seniors who feel affectionate about their partner after all those years (and those who found love later in life), so we compiled six of the best old people love stories of the past year to warm your heart.
