2011 had scarcely started before my life turned into a heaping pile of dog shit.

The Frisky was being sold to new owners and our jobs (and paychecks) were held in balance. My boyfriend started diddling around with some girl on the Internet, got caught, and dumped me. He asked me to move out of our apartment and I moved back into my childhood bedroom in the suburbs.

All this happened in the span of two weeks.

My life looked as bleak as the January freeze outside — which, incidentally, trapped me indoors with my parents during a blizzard for longer than should be considered legal under the Geneva Convention.

But friends, family and even strangers surprised me with their mercy in the days, weeks, and months that followed. My best friend, who lives an ocean away, called constantly. My sister drove me down to New Jersey to help me move out of my apartment. A reverend who I barely knew spent hours on the phone talking me down from ledges of broken confidence and self-hatred. Frisky readers wrote me the sweetest, most uplifting blog comments and emails that brought me to tears. Amelia let me sleep on her couch. As my life as I knew it fell apart, I saw the strength of my support system, which I hadn’t even known I had. Keep reading »

When I tell people, “I live with my boyfriend three days a week,” I often get two reactions. 

1. “That must be-um– challenging.” 

2. “That sounds ideal!”  

The first reaction often comes from a place of concern. How can you have a meaningful long term relationship when you only see each other three days a week?  You can’t possibly know what it’s like to have a real, full-time relationship. Jerzy Bielecki was 19-year-old when he was thrown into a German concentration camp, accused of being a member of the Polish resistance. Bielecki spent three years at the camps before he met Cyla Cybulska, a young Polish Jew who was sent there with her brothers and parents. Cyla was the only one of her family to survive, and was sent to work in the camp’s grain warehouse, where she met Jerzy. The pair were only allowed to speak a minimum of words to one another, but over the course of the next eight months, the two fell in love. Your 10 Best “How My Parents Met” Stories

Last week, we shared the stories of how our parents met. From Ami’s parents — who met at summer camp — to Kate’s mom and dad — who bonded over Shakespeare in the Park — you guys immediately connected and shared your own parents adorable stories. We noticed a couple of startling similarities in so many of the tales shared — for one, that people used to get married at a much younger age. That’s not entirely surprising — but it is rather shocking that so many stories involved couples getting engaged after only six weeks, and married after only six months. It seems the courting and engagement period was typically much, much shorter than it is now. And what’s more, from your stories anyway, most of those couples seem to still be happily married today. Just something to consider.

How Did Your Parents Meet?

This past weekend, my dad threw my mom a surprise birthday party. This is the second surprise birthday party he’s thrown her in five years, which is partly because I think he just really enjoys organizing surprises and partly because he really loves my mom and this is his way of making her feel special. My parents are still married, which is, yes, increasingly rare, and incredibly bizarre considering how utterly different they are. My mom is a Democrat. My dad purports to be a Republican. He’s an analytical nuclear engineer and she’s a palm-reading, feelings-focused guidance counselor (no, she does not read the palms of her students). I’m sitting alone in my apartment on a rainy night. I’m restless, mildly bored, and, yes, I’ll admit it, but please don’t tell anyone … lonely. It’s days like this that I’m sure that there’s no more love in store for me — all of the epically momentous possibilities must have already passed me by. Somehow I blinked and missed them. It’s in moments like this that I allow myself the small indulgence of thinking about Sebastian.

Our story had all of the makings of a great love story. Once upon a time we met one evening in a dark, crowded party. He told me I was beautiful. I was young enough for him to appear larger than life. We kissed on the sidewalk in the rain. I fell hard for him — hard like scrape-me-off-the-floor-with-a-spatula hard. But we were wrong for each other in every way. We were young, immature, and troubled. It ended tragically – Sebastian stood me up on a cold, snowy New Year’s Eve and the two of us never spoke again. Before There Were Emails, There Were Letters (600 Of Them)

Here’s your daily dose of sweetness: a couple in England who fell in love as teenagers writing letters back and forth during WWII is celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this week. Geoff and Pat Bunyan, now 83 and 82, became friends in 1945 shortly before Geoff was deployed to fight in the war. Over the next several years (Geoff remained overseas after the war ended to “clean up the mess”), the two sent a whopping 600 letters to each other, numbering each one to keep track of them. Though the letters began with a friendly tone, as the two shared stories and opened up to each other, their correspondence took a more romantic turn. Soon, they were proclaiming their love to one another, looking forward to the day Geoff would return to England and they could be together. When Geoff finally returned home in 1948 — three years after he left! — he married Pat and the two of them bought a house together, which they still live in to this day. Keep reading »

Love and War: A Story That Will Melt Your Heart

When six-year-old Jannah Lynn Medvec was given a homework assignment to write a soldier in Iraq, her recently divorced mother, Carol, took her to church to get the pen pal’s name off a list of military men. The little girl began writing Army Reserve Sgt. Jim Schulz in 2006, and soon he began corresponding with her three other siblings too, acting as a father figure. Divorced with grown children, Schulz was lonely and found the dating scene difficult since his idea of fun was curling up with his cat in front of the television — which he had done night after night back in his small hometown of 2500 people, just one mile from the Medvecs. When Sgt. Schulz returned for a second tour of duty in Iraq, his job was to repair vehicles that had been attacked — an extremely demanding task on its own. Additionally, he had been in six roadside bomb accidents and had won a Bronze star for bravery after rescuing two other soldiers from a burning vehicle. Keep reading »
