ESPO Sends Us A Love Letter

Artist Steve Powers started out as a graffiti writer, tagging under the name ESPO. These days, he’s embarked on a creative way to beautify his environment and bring city folks together. His “A Love Letter for You” project involves artists painting love notes and sweet nothings on city buildings and bridges in an effort to inspire a little love and tenderness. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton had one of those great, epic love affairs that spanned decades. Yes, she had many, many grooms, but I think the fact that Richard was her groom twice qualifies him as the most important man in her life. (Well, with the exception of Michael Jackson, maybe.) Their relationship was tumultuous, full of twists and turns. At times they were madly, passionately in love; at others times, they were hating each other; and sometimes they were just friends. Now we will finally get a glimpse into Burton’s complex inner life and the couple’s complicated relationship. The Juliet Club Keeps The Love Story Of Romeo And Juliet Alive

Last night, I was watching a travel show, and I learned about The Juliet Club. Based in Verona, Italy, where Shakespeare’s Juliet Capulet of Romeo and Juliet lived, the group receives thousands of letters every year addressed to Juliet. The notes arrive from around the world and come for a variety of reasons and from a diverse group of people — those looking for love advice, people seeking out Juliet herself, or lonely souls wanting to understand the secret to finding true love. In turn, the members of The Juliet Club reply to each and every Juliet letter they receive. Many of the letters are addressed simply to “Juliet, Verona, Italy,” but they find their way to Verona eventually. As the letters are written in a wide range of languages — from Braille to Chinese — the club seeks out an appropriate volunteer to answer, so no love note goes unresponded to. Sweet, no? Before There Were Emails, There Were Letters (600 Of Them)

Here’s your daily dose of sweetness: a couple in England who fell in love as teenagers writing letters back and forth during WWII is celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this week. Geoff and Pat Bunyan, now 83 and 82, became friends in 1945 shortly before Geoff was deployed to fight in the war. Over the next several years (Geoff remained overseas after the war ended to “clean up the mess”), the two sent a whopping 600 letters to each other, numbering each one to keep track of them. Though the letters began with a friendly tone, as the two shared stories and opened up to each other, their correspondence took a more romantic turn. Soon, they were proclaiming their love to one another, looking forward to the day Geoff would return to England and they could be together. When Geoff finally returned home in 1948 — three years after he left! — he married Pat and the two of them bought a house together, which they still live in to this day. Keep reading »

Speaking of Madonna … on August 5, a company called Gotta Have It! is putting on a rock n’ roll memorabilia auction. A lot of crazy crap is going to be up for grabs, but our favorite items are Madonna’s love letters and super-sexual voice messages to former boy-toy Jim Albright. There are 21 letters total (bidding starts at $3K), plus 17 minutes of voice recordings (bidding starts at $25K), and a 15-minute personal video of Madge shot while she was filming “Dangerous Games” (opening bid, $10K). Mushy Moment Of The Day: Couple Marries After Long-Lost Love Letter Was Discovered

This is one of those moments that makes me believe true love does exist. Steve Smith and Carmen Ruiz-Perez, both 42, finally walked down the aisle after 16 years of separation. The couple fell in love and became engaged when they were in their 20s, but drifted apart when Ruiz-Perez had to move back to France from England. After a few years, Smith sent her a love letter in the hopes of rekindling the romance.

In Their Own Way, Text Messages Are Keeping Romance Alive

A survey by the U.K.’s National Trust found that 70 percent of women and 53 percent of men would rather get a love letter or poem than a text or email. Yet, of the 2,558 people surveyed, 62 percent had never sent a love letter, while 69 percent had sent an “I love you” text. Is technology killing romance?     White Lies In That Movie

    Movies are mostly made up, unless they’re documentaries. Certainly, some are “historical fiction” and include references to real places and events, but really, even if a movie isn’t an historical one, like Saving Private Ryan or something, it’s annoying when details aren’t quite right. For example, in Sex and the City, Carrie reads a book called Love Letters from Great Men, and it’s not even as though you would only know the title if you paused the DVD. She says the title out loud, maybe even several times, and the book doesn’t even exist. The nice folks at the New York Public Library did put together a list of similar options, though. Speaking of the library, it seems that you can’t really get married there. The reception could be held there, but not the ceremony. And even that would cost at least $50,000.
