Lou Reed Rhapsodizes On Life And Music In His Final Interview

Lou Reed said it himself: “My life is music.” The legendary Velvet Underground frontman, who passed away October 27 at the age of 71, wasn’t exactly known for his bedside manner, but that lovable curmudgeon sure did know a thing or two about sound. Lou gave what would be his final interview on September 21 as part of a photo shoot for French wireless company Parrot, for whom he had recently assisted with the optimization of their Parrot Zik headphones. “You do what you love, or you get arrested,” he deadpans at first, but when the topic shifts to music, his tone turns characteristically, well, lyrical. What a beautiful human being. [Rolling Stone]

To our neighbors:

What a beautiful fall! Everything shimmering and golden and all that incredible soft light. Water surrounding us.

Lou and I have spent a lot of time here in the past few years, and even though we’re city people this is our spiritual home.

Last week I promised Lou to get him out of the hospital and come home to Springs. And we made it!

Lou was a tai chi master and spent his last days here being happy and dazzled by the beauty and power and softness of nature. He died on Sunday morning looking at the trees and doing the famous 21 form of tai chi with just his musician hands moving through the air.

Lou was a prince and a fighter and I know his songs of the pain and beauty in the world will fill many people with the incredible joy he felt for life. Long live the beauty that comes down and through and onto all of us.

The Vatican Had No Idea Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” Was About Heroin

Gianfranco Cardinal Ravasi, the Vatican’s culture minister, was trying to do a solid by tweeting lyrics from the Lou Reed song “Perfect Day,” as a tribute to the late singer who passed away this weekend. You can see how it would be easy to mistake the lyrics for a simple love song:

Oh, it’s such a perfect day/I’m glad I spent it with you/Oh, such a perfect day/You just keep me hanging on.

Andy Warhol, the artist and luminary responsible for the postmodern visual movement known as pop, would have been 84 yesterday. Though his death at 58 was woefully premature, I have a feeling he wouldn’t have wanted to be around today — or, on the contrary, maybe he would, if only to see that America has transmogrified completely into the vulgar, consumer-driven culture he envisioned more than fifty years ago. Nothing I say could ever do Andy proper justice, so I’ll pay him homage this way: beauty inspiration culled from the man himself, a self-proclaimed “deeply superficial person” who believed in “low lights and trick mirrors,” and from the glow-in-the-dark people he surrounded himself with. (Yes, that includes Edie.) Put on a bit of required listening brought to you by Lou, click through, and remember: “If everyone isn’t beautiful, then no one is.” Keep reading »

Sweet Release: What’s In And Out The Week Of September 30th 2008

MUSIC

  • Jennifer Hudson Jennifer Hudson
I don’t want to hate on American Apparel, because I love it, but seriously, Oscar-winning Jennifer Hudson needs to fire her stylist. On the cover of her first solo record, she’s in a basic dress that hipsters have been humping in for years — boring! She’s too fabulous for that fashion faux pas! Maybe she’s just surrounding herself with the wrong kind of people, like her fiancé, Punk, from VH1’s “I Love New York 2.” Anyway, my apologies for putting the look over the sound, but the music isn’t much to write about. It’s just Top 40-style R&B. Still, she’s got a great voice and I’m sure you’ll be hearing “Spotlight” while you’re shopping at your drug store in the near future.
