People on the internet have been telling me I’m fat for at least a decade — since whenever the first full-body photograph of me appeared on a blog author page. I still remember one of the first times it happened. I was probably 22 years old, wearing a pink pencil skirt and cute black top, retro-style, in the photo.
“Just like I thought, she’s pear-shaped,” snarked one commenter, who apparently previously inferred from the quality of my writing that my body was not up to his high expectations, only to have it all confirmed by a photo.
I stood in front of the mirror in that same outfit, staring at my body from every angle, trying to figure out just how pear-shaped I was. Was it my thighs causing the problem? Had to be, right? I measured them. I calculated my BMI. I took more digital photos and compared them to the existing photo. I went through the size tags on all my clothes, trying to find the biggest one so I could prove to myself that I either was or wasn’t fat. Definitively.

An article by a health reporter for BBC news stated, “according to England’s public health minister, Anne Milton, general practitioners and other health professionals should tell people that they are fat instead of simply calling them obese. ” Getting people motivated to lose weight isn’t easy, because putting it on is a lot easier than getting it off. Losing weight also takes a lot more time and effort than it does to put it on. Many people feel helpless at a certain point because rapid results are not easily achieved.
Professor Lindsey Davies of UK Faculty of Public Health said, “People don’t want to be offensive. There is a lot of stigma to being a fat person.” Let’s be honest here, regardless of how fat we are, we never want to hear it. Being fat, especially in the society we live in, is looked down upon, judged and definitely not something many people embrace. Right about now, some brides are in a desperate race to shed pounds before their June weddings. And Slim Fast has come to their rescue with a new ad campaign that features fat bride cake toppers and asks, “Need to lose a little weight before your wedding?” The admittedly clever ads are definitely sexist, but reflect the culture we live in. Grooms don’t worry about their weight as much as their brides are expected to. That’s kind of funny because the only person I know who has tried Slim Fast to shed pounds is a man. He stopped using the product because it caused him to have grossly nauseating gas. And I also remember hearing that Slim Fast could cause anal leakage, so I think any bride would prefer to have a few extra pounds than to offend her guests with her stench and the possibility of a brown stain on her Vera Wang gown.
