Just In Case You Didn’t Hate Abercrombie & Fitch Quite Enough

A&F Do I Make You Look Fat? tee

By now you’ve probably heard that Abercrombie & Fitch is an exceedingly offensive company that aims to create clothes exclusively for the young people that CEO Mike Jeffries deems “cool.” But did you know that A&F has a long history of sexism, too? As The Huffington Post explains, back in 2005, activist Heather Arnet of the independent advocacy group, The Women and Girls Foundation, escorted 16 teenage girls to Abercrombie’s headquarters to protest a line of — surprise! – offensive T-shirts. The girls had decided to stage a boycott, affectionately named “girlcott,” of T-shirts which pit women against each other, baring phrases such as “I had a nightmare I was a brunette,” “Blondes are adored, brunettes are ignored,” and “Do I make you look fat?” Keep reading »

Discriminating against women because of their weight is a very real problem and it goes all the way to the jury box. A new study at Yale University observed 471 adults in mock court cases for four individuals, of whom they were presented pictures: a skinny man, a skinny woman, an obese man, and an obese women. As reported by Yale, “Male participants rated the obese female defendant guiltier than the lean female defendant, whereas female respondents judged the two female defendants equally regardless of weight.” Skinny male participants were more likely than their heftier brothers to negatively judge an obese female defendant. Yet there was absolutely no difference in how guilty the skinny and obese men were judged. Keep reading »

“A constant 14 percent of the feedback I get is hate mail. But a 100 percent of that 14 percent hate mail is about what what I look like: ‘I hate you not because of what you said, or some argument or some position that you have, but I hate you because you’re Rachel MadCOW, because you look like a cow’ or ‘you’re Rachel, but I’m going to call you him.’ (fake laughs) That’s the funniest joke in the whole world! It’s the same joke every time. … I want new hate mail. I want it to be about something other than me being mannish and cow-like.”

Rachel Maddow and Ellen DeGeneres held a Kickass Lesbian Summit today on “Ellen” and chatted about a new documentary about women in the media, “Miss Representation,” which airs tonight at 9 p.m. on OWN. I am not at all surprised that Rachel Maddow even got “you’re ugly!” hate mail when she was on the local radio. I’m sure 99.9 percent of people probably didn’t even know what she looked like. Tennis Is Not A Beauty Contest, Wimbledon

For shame, Wimbledon: the tennis tournament’s website is asking fans to vote on its most attractive players. Yesterday, the vote was about “best-looking” male players (Roger Federer won) and today the vote is about “best-looking” women players. The vote isn’t even about something that involves a little bit of skill or personality, like the best on court-style: it’s just a straight up beauty contest hosted on the tournament’s web site. Meghan McCain Lashes Back At Glenn Beck For Fat-Shaming

Dang it, Meghan McCain is really making me like her! The conservative up-and-comer visited “The Tonight Show” on Monday and spoke out about vile Glenn Beck, who devoted several minutes of barf noises on his radio show to fat-shaming McCain after she posed in a nude bodysuit for a skin cancer PSA. “No man will ever make me a victim, least of all Glenn Beck!” McCain said, wagging her finger in the air and laughing. You go, girl! Keep reading »

Adele’s Music Is Her Strong Suit, Not Her “Boobs Or Bum”

“My life is full of drama and I won’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like. I don’t like going to the gym. I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine. Even if I had a really good figure, I don’t think I’d get my tits and ass out for no one. I love seeing Lady Gaga’s boobs and bum. I love seeing Katy Perry’s boobs and bum. Love it. But that’s not what my music is about. I don’t make music for eyes. I make music for ears.”

Tacos The Downfall Of “Fat” Miss San Antonio Beauty Queen

Beauty pageants are brutal, yo: Pageant officials have stripped Domonique Ramirez, 17, of her Miss San Antonio beauty queen title and handed off the tiara to another girl because, among other violations, Ramirez reportedly got too fat from eating tacos.

The Miss Bexar County Organization stripped Ramirez of her crown recently for contract violations like failing to show up for events, taking modeling gigs not sanctioned by the pageant, and not writing thank you notes. Oh, sweetie, your job isn’t that hard. She sued and the pageant filed a countersuit, itemizing the list of contract violations, which included her failure to maintain the same weight she was when she won the pageant. Domonique Ramirez clocks in at 5’8″ and 129 lbs, the porker! While testifying on the stand over the past week, Ramirez said she was told by pageant officials she had to lose 13 lbs. Keep reading »

Rosario Dawson Blasts Looks-Obsessed Hollywood

“My whole job is mostly about feeling like I am discriminated against because I am a woman. It is completely OK to [discriminate] outright and out loud — it is wild, but I deal with it. I feel like being an actress, being told to lose weight and be younger — it’s crazy, but it is part and parcel of the game. To say that looks or age or sex doesn’t matter is ridiculous. But I feel lucky in that every single woman pretty much on the planet has to deal with that sense of how she looks, portrays herself, and this and that. We are scrutinized and compared and all of that kind of stuff. That is kind of what it is to be a woman, unfortunately, still to this day. Even with the coups of feminism we are still there. But at least every other woman is going through that. It’s not something extra special that I have to go through. It is just part of my job.”

— “Unstoppable” actress Rosario Dawson on Hollywood holding women like her under a microscope. While it’s true that it’s an image-conscious business for all actors and actresses, it’s no secret that the pressure is especially intense for women. [Daily Telegraph] Keep reading »
