Probably the biggest movie this holiday season? Unquestionably “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” And as such, its star, Rooney Mara, is on the brink of major mega stardom. Her dystopian take on Lisbeth Salander, shaved eyebrows, piercings, tattoos and all — has become the talked about look this season, and is already being reflected on some runways. But what might the movie — and Lisbeth — been had she been played by other well-known actresses? Say, Scarlett Johansson (a blonde Lisbeth?) Or Keira Knightley (a highbrow British Salander)? The ladies of the blog But You’re Like Really Pretty re-imagined Ms. Dragon Tattoo as such. Take a look. [But You're Like Really Pretty]
I poured through Stieg Larsson’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo book series in, like, three weeks, utterly captivated with the compelling story line(s), complex characters, and great writing, somewhat of a rarity for page-turning beach reads. Most of all, I was obsessed with the character of Lisbeth Salander, the unlikely heroine of Larsson’s trilogy. Tough as nails, emotionally guarded, and utterly brilliant, with dozens of piercings and tattoos, Lisbeth is a victim turned warrior. I am excited to see Rooney Mara make the character her own in the American film adaptation of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” which hits theaters Dec. 21. (Check out an exclusive photo from the film, above!)
In Lisbeth’s honor, here are 12 other kick ass female film and TV characters and the women who played them.
So, let me get this straight: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is about a woman attempting to outrun a sadistic rapist and solve a murder, so naturally you’d want to design a line of clothing around her look. Well, not really. It seems that H&M’s “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” collection is mostly a mish-mosh of faded and dingy colors, intentionally worn fabrications and rather impossible to wear stretch faux leathers. So yeah, I won’t be bothering with any of it. But what about you? Feeling the Lisbeth Salander look?

“I thought everyone would hate me! The readers of the books have such a strong relationship with her as a character, I thought they’d never accept what I did with Lisbeth. It felt like a suicide mission to accept the role.”

Yesterday, after months of speculation, David Fincher announced that he’d cast Rooney Mara
as Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
.” Some people are sighing with relief that the role didn’t go to a rumored big name like Scarlett Johansson

. But others are wondering who the heck this girl is.
