Beauty Test Drive: L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour Stars Collection

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with lipstick for the last two years. I love red lipstick and apply it perfectly in the morning, even using a matching lip liner to outline and fill in my lips first. But it never fails that once I take a mouthful of yogurt at work, my spoon is wearing most of my lipstick. I can’t stand to see lipstick marks on utensils, glasses, or napkins, especially if I’m the smudgy culprit. What I hate more, though, is having lipstick on my teeth and no one telling me. So I was pretty psyched to try out L’Oreal’s Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour Stars Collection in Beyonce Red, a very vibrant red suitable for life in the limelight and on stage. The Infallible lip color basecoat and topcoat are housed in a handy-dandy compact that functions as a mirror in a pinch too. Do you remember when nail polish colors other than pink and red were shocking? When Chanel‘s Vamp came down the runway in 1994, it caused a major stir. Now everyone wears purple, navy, and, yes, even black on their fingers, but outrageous lip colors are another story. Every once in a while we’ll see makeup artists painting the puckers of models in shades of lavender, gray, and other unexpected choices for fashion shows, but this makeup look hasn’t quite trickled down to the masses yet. I Love Lipstick

Truth to tell, that lipstick survey — the one that says lipstick is, well, over — has been bumming me out. I love the stuff. But this wasn’t always the case. When I was a little girl in the ’80s watching my mother slather bright pinks across her cheeks and perky blues over her lids, I hassled her. “Moo-o-o-oom,” I’d whine, “I like your face the way it is.” But she didn’t leave the house without putting her face on first. I carried my staunch anti-makeup stance almost entirely through high school, only breaking down occasionally for a little goth-inspired black eyeliner and mascara. Makeup was part of “The Man.” It was the enemy, keeping women down and stuff, by convincing them they’d never be good or pretty enough without another bottle of goopy stuff.

Pro Trick To Get Lips Their Darkest Aubergine

Besides all the signature zigzag prints and tribal silhouettes, the real star of Missoni‘s Fall 2010 show was (for me anyway), the deep, dark eggplant-hued lips the models sported in what MAC makeup artist Lucia Peroni called “A little bit Scottish, a little Masai, a little punk.” Sounds good to me. I’m a little obsessed because I’ve always been drawn to lip shades in blackberries and deep plums–must be my junior high goth roots–but Lucia’s mix is ultra arresting and looks really unique. To get the look she used MAC Eye Pencil in Ebony, mixed Lipsticks in Cyber and Hang-Up and blended them into the lips with a brush, then applied Matte on top to get rid of any and all shine. How ’bout that! Black eye liner to get your darkest plum! Love it. Will I be wearing this look to work Monday? Not bloody likely, but I may do some experimenting this weekend. Keep reading »

The Sleek Lip Show At Davidelfin

Makeup artist Gregory Arlt dubbed the Davidelfin fall 2010 beauty look the “lip show” because, as you guessed it, the makeup was all about lipstick. Most of the Davidelfin collection is black, but Gregory said he was inspired by two magenta coats, so he created a full lip to match. He first applied the Process Magenta Paint Stick from the MAC Pro line (we non-professionals can use the MAC lipstick in Lustering for the same effect). Then, he dabbed the Show Orchid lipstick on top. The combo of both of these pigments created a neon fuchsia, which is a departure from the typical fall lip colors of burgundy, blood red, and classic red. To keep the focus on the lip, Gregory left the skin and eyes “cold” with little to no color. The skin was moisturized with Studio Moisture Fix, and then he applied Face and Body Foundation. The foundation was set with Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, which Gregory calls “the all you need powder” because it doesn’t look like powder, but also buffs away the rubbery texture of foundation. The cheeks were left bare; instead he contoured them following the natural bone structure of the models. He defined the eyes by applying an eyeshadow that matched the models’ skin tone and then applied a darker but also natural-looking shadow into the creases. Gregory also applied concealer to the eyebrows to give them a bleached look, but he doesn’t recommend this for regular women — it’s purely for the runway. With a lip this bold, the hair was left sleek and simple with a low, braided ponytail. Check out more photos after the jump. Keep reading »

Two-Toned Lips At Nanette Lepore

The beauty at Nanette Lepore’s fall 2010 show was inspired by women in Renaissance paintings, but makeup artist Makky’s two-toned lips look anything but old-fashioned. He applied MAC Cosmetics’ MAC PRO lipstick in Charred Red, a dark burgundy, to the bottom lip. Then, he put Odyssey, a bright fuchsia, on the top. While Makky doesn’t recommend wearing this out on the street as-is, he suggested using two different (but not quite this different) colors for a similar effect. Just make sure to put the darker color on the bottom lip, because otherwise, he told us, your top lip will look thin. Good to know. Keep reading »

Would You Rock Chloe’s Super Fuchsia Lip?

We’re slightly obsessed with the statement lips Chloe Sevigny rocked at Interview magazine’s 40th anniversary party. And we’ve always loved pink hues, but we’ve never gone quite so bold. Chloe’s shade seems to be a magenta-fuchsia that’s almost purple. If you do want to try it out, here are some suggestions for purpley-pink products to get the look!
