Kick off your boots, fuzzy socks, and leg warmers (um, do people wear those?): spring is coming, and soon. Okay, so that may be a little bit of wishful thinking on my part, and there may or may not have been a snowstorm less than a week ago. But still, spring is well on its way (hello, Daylight Savings Time!), and because it’s about a month too early to even think about breaking out the shorts, we’ve got spring beauty on the mind. We’re phasing out winter’s more somber lip colors — plum, berry, Bordeaux, what have you — and moving towards punchier warm-weather shades. I can’t be the only one who gets excited about seasonal makeup, right? Oh, well; here are the 7 spring lip colors we can’t (and won’t — I’ve got one of them on right now) wait to wear. Keep reading »
As the kind of girl who leaves red lipstick stains on everything, everywhere, I have scared off more than a few men (and probably small children) in my day. There’s nothing more alarming to a guy than a slick red mouth that pretty much guarantees it’s going to end up all over you. Any other day of the year, I would advise you to pile on the MAC Lady Danger and join me in terrifying the penis-wielding population, but I suppose some changes must be made in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. For those who are married to their lipstick, but want to look just slightly more kissable this time of year, here are 10 subtle lip colors in moisturizing formulas to pump up your pout without sending your male counterpart, prospective or otherwise, running for the hills…
Never in the million years did I think I’d be recommending you a product sold exclusively at Walmart, renowned big box store of sex discrimination lawsuits and sexist tee shirts. Neither would I have suspected that Drew Barrymore, hippie goddess of love and light, would choose Walmart to exclusively sell her makeup line, Flower. But she did, and I am, and honestly, her Flower lip butter is the best lip product I’ve ever used. Yes, better than the expensive department store lipsticks and drug store lip crayons. It’s the shit. For realz.
I went home from a Flower event with a bag full of goodies to test drive and the quality of all of them is very high. I’ll review them one-by-one, but first up, the lip butter!

As a beauty product enthusiast (one might also say “hoarder,” if one were being less kind), lipstick is one of my very favorite things. At any given moment I have a bare minimum of 5 tubes rattling around in my handbag… and another 500 at home. When I buy a new one, (which I do, often) I consider the color, the texture, the packaging, the longevity of the formula, and sometimes, let’s be honest, just how luxurious it looks and feels. What I am definitely not thinking about, however, is what goes into it. Keep reading »
I am very possibly a lip beauty product hoarder. Alas, that is not what we are here to discuss.
I’d long admired the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain at my local pharmacy, but I never felt justified in forking over $8 for yet another lip product. Then last weekend I lost my nerve and finally bought the shade Lovesick, a vibrant-but-not-clownish hot pink. Keep reading »
From brick to burgundy, matte to glossy, celebs across the country have been spotted wearing this fall’s classic trend: dark lipstick.
Stars are pairing it with jeans and a sweatshirt to liven up a casual day on the town, or with an elegant evening gown for a night on the red carpet. Whatever the occasion, dark lipstick adds instant glam to your look! Read more…
The holiday season is coming up and it’s all about the parties. For every LBD, you’re going to need a smashing lip color to go with it. And that’s where Lipstick Queen Poppy King’s lip crayons for Kate Spade come in. This little set comes with three gorgeous lip colors in party-ready shades of burgundy, red and peach. Each is small enough to fit in a clutch, but the packaging is festively cute as well. Never will you be at a loss after a post-mistletoe touch-up again! [$38, Kate Spade]
With her fair hair and icy complexion, there’s no doubt in my mind that Amanda Seyfried can pull off just about any makeup look. The “Les Misérables” actress killed it at Paris Fashion Week earlier in the month wearing the season’s perfectly on-trend plum lipstick, but she brightened things up for the Hollywood Film Awards Gala this week in a vivid poppy shade. I love this look ― it’s very old Hollywood with a punchy, youthful twist, and it’s a surefire way to keep spirits aloft in even the greyest, most dismal fall weather. Better still, it’s day-to-night versatile; it makes a serious statement for the 9-to-5 then transforms into pure glamour when the sun goes down, and you don’t even have to do anything. So what are you waiting for? Keep reading »
For all my love of all the makeup, I’m undeniably fickle. I buy and try everything, only to eventually cast it all aside because it isn’t quite perfect. This is especially true when it comes to my lip color ― not only do I need the hottest, brightest orange-leaning red this side of the sun, I need it to be long-lasting (as in, all day), easy to use on the go, and as shine-free as possible without transmogrifying my lips into the Gobi Desert, whether it’s the middle of July or the end of December. (Oh, and pretty packaging never hurts.) My ruthless criteria systematically slays all inferior formulas until only one remains: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. A creamy, vividly pigmented lipstick in the form of a chubby pencil, this velvety matte glides on easy, and miraculously manages to look seamlessly put-together even when smeared on with abandon (like, say, on a moving train). I’m partial to Red Square (shown), but you can take your pick of 17 shades, from the palest nude to deep, dark aubergine. Fair warning: you might want to pick up extras, you know, one for every bag. It’s that good. [$24, NARS Cosmetics]
