3 Ways To Wear Wine-Colored Lipstick This Holiday Season

3 Ways To Wear Wine-Colored Lipstick This Holiday Season

I feel like we kind of have an “honesty at all times” policy over here at The Frisky. I may not be particularly forthcoming about my sex life or getting tampons lost inside of me, so I guess it’s only fair that I divulge all of my beauty secrets, no facades to be allowed. Let’s start with the most pressing: I am coming off what I like to think of as a lipstick diet. It is a diet in two senses: metaphorically, insofar as I am restricting myself from purchasing them, much like one restricts certain foods or manners of eating on an actual diet, and literally, insofar as when I do wear lipstick I tend to actually eat it off my face. Sephora Pulls Kat Von D’s “Celebutard” Lipstick

kat von d celebutard lipstick

Kat Von D is a woman of many questionable decisions. Her latest poor life choice is not detrimental to her personal life, though: she had a lipstick in her Painted Love makeup line with Sephora called  ”Celebutard.” Is it a very pretty pink-nude lipstick?  Yes. Is using the word “tard” grossly offensive to people with developmental disabilities and their loved ones? Also yes. Keep reading »

Lipstick Diss Leads To Face Slashing

lipstick mouth

Oh no you didn’t! A woman in Simsbury, Connecticut slashed another woman on the dance floor after she criticized her lipstick. Police say the victim had spoken to the slasher in the restaurant’s bathroom and told her that her lipstick “did not look good on her.” Oh, snap! So naturally, the lady on the receiving end of the lipstick diss marched on to the dance floor and slashed the other woman across the face with an unknown “sharp object.” The victim was transported to a hospital via an ambulance and is recovering; it’s unclear what happened to the slasher, although hightailing it to the nearest Bobbi Brown counter is a good guess. Violence is never the answer, but perhaps the victim will think twice about dissing another woman’s makeup …. ever. Ladies be sensitive. I’m not trying to brag here, but I get a lot of free makeup. Like, a lot. Not only is it more than enough to feed my product addiction, previously believed to be insatiable, but at this point I have so much makeup I don’t even know what to do with it anymore. Seriously, I won’t let anyone, regardless of gender, leave my home without a bag full of loot. Suffice it to say, I do not go out of my way to purchase new stuff — in fact, until yesterday, I hadn’t set foot in my old stomping grounds (the Sephora in Union Square, obvs) in god knows how long. Six months? A year, even? Practically unheard of!

When I heeded its siren call at long last, trust me when I say that I had no intention of spending any money. I didn’t even HAVE any money. What I did have was some time to kill and a tepid interest in checking out some new products and spritzing perfume on my sweaty, barely presentable self before meeting this gentleman for some guacamole. And yet! Being as it is that I am Me, and that I love Items, I could not leave empty-handed. I could never leave Sephora empty-handed; that would be a cardinal sin. But so frequently I leave with an item (or items) that I regret having purchased in record time. I haven’t even made it to the subway by the time I’m like, “Should I turn my ass around and return this right now?” This is not the case with Laura Mercier Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lip Color. In fact, I think I may have fallen in love last night, and not with my dinner date. Keep reading »

rihanna riri woo lipstick

So, you guys, this is basically my worst fear EVER: a woman says she got herpes from using a tester tube of lipstick! Starkeema Greenidge of Harlem attended a Rihanna concert earlier this month, where the makeup brand MAC was holding a popup shop and selling Rihanna’s new RiRi Woo lipstick. Like many a woman before her, Greenidge sauntered over to the tester tubes and tried the RiRi Woo lipstick on. An employee even told her to “press her lips together and spread the lipstick around.” And that’s when, according to Greenidge’s lawsuit against MAC, that she got HERPES. Two days after the Rihanna concert, a cold sore appeared on her lip, which her doctor diagnosed as oral herpes. Now she’s suing the company for not using a “fresh or new lipstick tube,” which is “unsanitary and exposing patrons to possible spread of disease.” Well now. Aren’t germs and possible diseases kinda the risk you run by testing communally-used makeup inside a store? MAC is not going to open a fresh lipstick for every single patron because that would be expensive and wasteful. They probably should either disinfect each lipstick or should wipe the top, used part of lipstick off before each new use. But I am a major germophobe and vigilant about wiping lipsticks whenever I test colors. Vigilance! It seems like the best defense of public grossness. Trust no one, Starkeema Greenidge. There are a few things that every makeup-lovin’ lady needs to have in her arsenal. It’s sort of like the difference between romantic prospects and friends: bold lipsticks and punchy eyeshadows come and go, but your Holy Grail products are forever. The perfect foundation that matches your complexion exactly and makes it look flawless; the perfect concealer that magically causes every blemish or imperfection you might have to vanish on the spot; the perfect neutral shadow that makes your eyes look bigger and brighter… and of course, the perfect go-to lip color.

Generally referred to as “my lips but better” (or MLBB), the ideal go-to lip color does just that — it suits your skin tone and flatters your face better than a brighter, trendier shade, and it imparts color and impact in a way that a clear lip balm just doesn’t. You could also refer to this type of lip color as “nude,” but it definitely isn’t the generic pale, corpse-y beige that comes to mind. It’s your nude, and it’s different for everyone. So let’s get to finding yours! Keep reading »

6 Spring Lip Colors We Can’t (And Won’t!) Wait To Wear

Kick off your boots, fuzzy socks, and leg warmers (um, do people wear those?): spring is coming, and soon. Okay, so that may be a little bit of wishful thinking on my part, and there may or may not have been a snowstorm less than a week ago. But still, spring is well on its way (hello, Daylight Savings Time!), and because it’s about a month too early to even think about breaking out the shorts, we’ve got spring beauty on the mind. We’re phasing out winter’s more somber lip colors — plum, berry, Bordeaux, what have you — and moving towards punchier warm-weather shades. I can’t be the only one who gets excited about seasonal makeup, right? Oh, well; here are the 7 spring lip colors we can’t (and won’t — I’ve got one of them on right now) wait to wear. 10 Lip Colors That Won’t Scare Off Your (Or Any) Guy

As the kind of girl who leaves red lipstick stains on everything, everywhere, I have scared off more than a few men (and probably small children) in my day. There’s nothing more alarming to a guy than a slick red mouth that pretty much guarantees it’s going to end up all over you. Any other day of the year, I would advise you to pile on the MAC Lady Danger and join me in terrifying the penis-wielding population, but I suppose some changes must be made in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. For those who are married to their lipstick, but want to look just slightly more kissable this time of year, here are 10 subtle lip colors in moisturizing formulas to pump up your pout without sending your male counterpart, prospective or otherwise, running for the hills…
