For all my love of all the makeup, I’m undeniably fickle. I buy and try everything, only to eventually cast it all aside because it isn’t quite perfect. This is especially true when it comes to my lip color ― not only do I need the hottest, brightest orange-leaning red this side of the sun, I need it to be long-lasting (as in, all day), easy to use on the go, and as shine-free as possible without transmogrifying my lips into the Gobi Desert, whether it’s the middle of July or the end of December. (Oh, and pretty packaging never hurts.) My ruthless criteria systematically slays all inferior formulas until only one remains: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. A creamy, vividly pigmented lipstick in the form of a chubby pencil, this velvety matte glides on easy, and miraculously manages to look seamlessly put-together even when smeared on with abandon (like, say, on a moving train). I’m partial to Red Square (shown), but you can take your pick of 17 shades, from the palest nude to deep, dark aubergine. Fair warning: you might want to pick up extras, you know, one for every bag. It’s that good. [$24, NARS Cosmetics]

4 Ways To Rock The Purple Lip Trend

Unlike orange or tangerine, purple lipstick is a trendy color that works on everyone; you just have to find the right shade. I suggest printing some pictures out (like the ones below) of lip colors you like and take them with you to the makeup counter. This will help narrow down your options and give the person helping you a better idea of what you’re looking for. Read more…

French Artist Sculpts A 330-Pound Cube Out Of Yves Saint Laurent Lipstick

Leave it to the French to come up with a fresh, creative, avant-garde use for a practical product from one of their most iconic brands: conceptual artist Fabrice Hyber crafted a 330-pound, one-meter cube, titled “1m3 de Beauté” (or “One Cubic Meter of Beauty”) of solid Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in shade 1 Le Rouge. Hyber (who, it’s worth noting, is male) told WWD of his masterpiece, “[Lipstick is] a material that is very supple, especially in a large quantity. The material permanently moves. It is a work that is never finished, which is always evolving. It’s a living oeuvre.” This makes total sense to me, as I know from experience that the buttery Rouge Pur Couture formula tends to make a melty “living oeuvre” out of my stupid face. The sculpture has just gone on show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Bring a lip brush. [Elle UK]

I’ve never been big on lipstick. I have thin lips and I also drink coffee constantly, so it seemed like any foray into lipstick would be a waste. But as I get older (and wean myself off caffeine), I’ve taken the plunge into what feels like more grown-up makeup than my usual lip balm, or if I’m feeling fancy, lip gloss. Recently I splurged on Bobbi Brown’s Rich Lip Color in Cosmic Raspberry at Bloomingdales (AKA that flaming pit in which I throw my money). Keep reading »

Ever since I got in on the bold lipstick game, I’ve been on the hunt for the most pigmented, longest-lasting color around. It’s fairly safe to say that I’ve tried at least half of the formulas on the market (or at least that you can buy at Sephora, where I am basically the resident squatter), and while I’ve found some that I really love, it’s usually for their moisturizing qualities, ease of use, and, um, attractiveness of the package in my hand, never the bright, true color and lasting power that I initially set out for. Lip Tar, a 100% vegan and cruelty-free product by Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, is unlike anything I’ve ever tried, and it seriously delivers. Keep reading »

Gwen Stefani And Prada Are Cool With Coloring Outside The (Lip) Lines

I’m like a magpie as far as beauty products go — I’m drawn instinctively to anything bright, sparkly, bizarre, or beautiful — but when it comes to what I put on my own face, I’m an unlikely makeup classicist, and I most definitely stay inside the lines. At the S/S 2013 Prada show in Milan, models (like Jessica Stam, left) walking the runway sported fluorescent red lips that erred ever-so-slightly outside the natural barrier, resulting in an overall effect that’s more cartoonish than chic (wax lips, anybody? I ate a fair few in my day. Spoiler: they are disgusting). General consensus seems to be that this exaggerated lip look is best left to ’90s pop stars — like, say, Gwen Stefani, who showed off a similar shape at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. Frankly, I wouldn’t be caught dead in it. Would you?

The cooler seasons always call for more dramatic beauty looks, from sultry smoky eyes to vampy red lips, but this year’s focus is especially inclined toward a statement lip that’s a touch darker than the usual fall fare. Most of us (myself included) won’t have the guts for the vampy bordeaux lips we’ve been seeing on celebs, but a striking red never goes out of style (plus, it totally completes an otherwise low-maintenance face, perfect for those foggy mornings where you just don’t want to get out of bed). The catch to wearing the look is that, while bold opaque lipstick is guaranteed to grab attention, it also grabs on to any wayward imperfections, like fine lines or chapped lips. There are a few steps you can take to get the most out of your lipstick, whether it’s matte or satin, burgundy or coral — just follow these tips and go for it! Keep reading »

Will You Be Wearing Matching Lips And Nails This Fall?

Chanel Tries Dada
This new ad campaign for Rouge Allure is very avant-garde. Read More »

So I guess matching your lipstick to your nail polish is kind of a thing now? A bevy of designers, from Giorgio Armani to Zac Posen, walked coordinating shades down the runway last season, but something about its slightly contrived nature led me to believe it was just one of those things that wouldn’t take in the real world. It strikes me as having a very sophisticated Upper East Side vibe, which just doesn’t work for me. And yet ever-tempting brands like Dior and Chanel are giving their seal of approval by launching “twin sets” of nail lacquer and lipstick intended to be worn together, making the matchy-matchy trend a touch more difficult to resist. Are you into it, or do you think this is a look best worn by ladies who lunch? (Shown L-R: Chanel Le Vernis in Infidèle and Rouge Allure Velvet in L’Infidèle; Dior Addict Extreme Lipstick and Vernis Nail Lacquer in Incognito)

Men Hate Women Who ... Read? Reap? Weep?

In the vast, ever-evolving cosmos of luxury makeup, Chanel unfailingly offers some of the very best — and they come with gorgeous artsy videos, to boot. The brand has been teasing us with short promotional flicks advertising their upcoming Rouge Allure reformulation for some time, and what this new video lacks in the hypnotic factor of the one that came out in July, it makes up for in quirky charm. The minute-long film is a homage to Erwin Blumenfeld, a Dadaist photographer responsible for a number of memorable Vogue covers back in the ’30s and ’40s. The new lipstick shades are to die for (and, for a Chanel makeup hoarder like me, an absolute must-have) and the video is just as alluring (heh) as its namesake, but the voiceover bit towards the end is a touch questionable. “Men hate women who …,” what? You’ll just have to listen for yourself. [Fashionista]

Anthropologie gives me a complex. I walk in and I’m like, “I want this life,” which turns into “Does anyone actually have this life?,” which quickly becomes “Why is this life so goddamn expensive?” I go because I want one top; I emerge with that top, a whimsical set of $20 bobby pins, a $60 coffee table book, and maybe some driftwood or tree branches. Don’t even get me started on their beauty section — as the biggest sucker of all time for gorgeously packaged items I definitely don’t need, I am all over it. Basically, Anthropologie is a well-designed trap, and they get me every time. It’s shabby chic, you guys! I need it! Keep reading »
