Remember when your swept on black lipstick from the costume shop that Halloween you were a witch? Well, guess what? You’re a trend setter because dark dark dark lipstick is all the rage. Now the tricky part is staying on trend without making it an homage to a goth getup.
The beauty at Nanette Lepore’s fall 2010 show was inspired by women in Renaissance paintings, but makeup artist Makky’s two-toned lips look anything but old-fashioned. He applied MAC Cosmetics’ MAC PRO lipstick in Charred Red, a dark burgundy, to the bottom lip. Then, he put Odyssey, a bright fuchsia, on the top. While Makky doesn’t recommend wearing this out on the street as-is, he suggested using two different (but not quite this different) colors for a similar effect. Studies found that though wrinkles may be most women’s hated addition to their face, it’s really the size of your lips which determines your age based on your physical appearance. From childhood until the age of about 30, it’s safe to assume that your lips will maintain their size, but with aging they tend to deflate. But here’s a hint: “Lip height” tends to be genetic, so take a peek at pictures of your mother and grandmother for a prediction of your own future. Of course, there are unnatural ways to elongate the time you’ll be able to enjoy full lips, but don’t get all Botox happy and inflate your lips to unrealistic sizes just to hold on to your youth.
