Lipstick 101: How To Find The Perfect Bold Lipstick

Figuring out how to wear a bold lip can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not used to wearing lipstick. (Or if you’re basically used to ignoring the fact that you have lips on your face altogether.) The wrong shade can wash you out, or make you look lizard-y. And when you’re wearing a bright, bold lip color you just can’t help but feel so out there in the open.

So that’s why we teamed up with esteemed makeup artist Susana to get a quick lesson on Lipstick 101. What we learned: you don’t have to fear a bold lip. Bright lipsticks can be fun, dramatic and totally sexy!

Makeup Bag: Put Some Spring On Your Lips

Is it still winter? I don’t even know anymore. The calendar says early March, a time of year that’s supposed to be defined by rain, slush, and extreme wind chill, but the weather has been saying 55 degrees and sunny. What?! For all intents and purposes, I have deemed that it is spring. It might as well be, anyway.

You could say I’m in a big hurry to bring out my spring clothes, which may not be the best or most informed decision as this capricious East Coast weather has been known to drop twenty degrees overnight. I’m clinging to my opaque black tights and boots for the time being, but the time has come for spring makeup: I can’t hold off on my hot pinks, eye-searing corals, and glossy nudes any longer. Here are my top picks for spring lip colors, so we can all channel a little bit of May in March.

L'Oreal Le Gloss photo

I’m going to be honest: what initially drew me to L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Gloss was the packaging. I’m the first to admit that I’m a sucker for advertising — I don’t even wear lip gloss. But I laid eyes on Le Gloss at a drugstore chain where I was in a rush to a) catch a train and b) make a credit card minimum. Le Gloss was in my line of vision, I liked the color in the tube and the minimalist design, and so I bought it.

Shopbop’s Sephora Palette Makes Life Easier!

Shopbop.com, one of our favorite online sources for designer duds and accessories, and Sephora have released the limited-edition SEPHORA COLLECTION Palette Color Play 5 in 1 palette that was inspired by the Shopbop “Faces of Fashion” editorial look book. This makeup kit contains five distinct mini palettes based on the five fashion icons: “A Nod to Mod,” “Angelic Boudoir,” “Black is the New Black,” “Boho Bombshell,” and “Classics Never Die.” The palettes contain every color imaginable from taupe to black, pink to blue, and purple to green. What’s even better is that the kit comes with a portable mirror compact, so you can pop one of the mini palettes in and take it with you for makeup touch-ups on the go. And you can’t beat the value of $150 for $30. [Sephora] Keep reading »

Glamorous Tartan Holiday

We’d be happy with having this red tartan bag just because it’s perfect for transporting our tiny valuables–like our favorite lipstick, coins, or jewelry. But MAC sweetened the deal by adding VIVA GLAM V lipstick and lip gloss to the ‘Tis Noble to Give VIVA GLAM Lip Bag. What’s even better? All proceeds go to the MAC AIDS Fund to help support people living with HIV/AIDS.

Win This! The Entire Avon Glazewear Lip Gloss Collection

A lot of trial and error goes into purchasing a new lip gloss color online, because those little color swatches aren’t always accurate. Avon has made this task easier. Among the 16 glosses available, five glosses deliver high-impact color, five give a sparkly shine, five have a megawatt luster, and one clear gloss provides high-shine and SPF protection. There’s a reason Glazewear Lip Glosses are a favorite among Avon customers, and it’s time for you to be in the know. [$1.99 for a limited time, Avon]

Mood Swing Lip Gloss Changes Color When You’re Feeling Sexy

For those who wear their heart on their sleeves, they can now also wear their libido on their lips. Makeup company Too Faced has just come out with a new lip gloss called Mood Swing, which supposedly changes colors when you’re feeling all sexytime-ish. How does it work? The only details released about it is that the product is “emotionally activated,” and “reacts with a girl’s body chemistry.” How scientific! So, if Mood Swing does work, it might make faking one a bit more difficult (assuming a guy even pays attention to your lip color—yeah, right).

One more thing—why does this only work on women? (Maybe it wouldn’t change colors on men because they’re horny all the time?) [$18.50, TooFaced.com] Keep reading »

Beauty Test Drive: Hourglass Ultra-Thin Lip Gloss

We don’t know about you, but we generally have enough random stuff floating in our purses that distinguishing a lip gloss tube from a hi-liter takes far longer than we’d like. Here to solve the problem is a new uber-skinny, almost card-shaped lip gloss from Hourglass. The colors are intense (we like the shade called “Pulse”), the container easier to dig out of a bag of junk totally necessary items and the consistency smooth, not sticky. So avoid the endless digging you get with regular lip gloss and the awkward boner jokes that come along with carrying a tube in your pocket. Because no, you’re not just happy to see him.
