Beauty Test Drive: Bite Beauty’s Decontructed Rose Lip Gloss Library

BTD-Crop-Gloss
Lipppppppppsticks!!!!!

I only get roses on birthdays and the occasional Valentine’s Day, so when I received Bite Beauty’s Limited-Edition Deconstructed Rose Lip Gloss Library, I knew it was a special occasion. Almost too pretty to use, the palette features 12 different hues of pink and red lip glosses, inspired by the colors found in a bouquet of roses. Obviously, I needed to test them all out one by one. Sweet Macaron Kisses

crave macaron lip gloss

Winona inspired snarling and gnashing of teeth at The Frisky offices when she announced that her boyfriend knows how to make macarons. She can have the delightful French cookies any time she wants. That bitch! But she’ll be the one green with envy once she sees my cute new macaron lip gloss. The pot opens to reveal an inside mirror and the pastel colors are precious. Just like real macarons. [$3.95, Neatoshop]

I have only the fondest memories of Lip Smackers Dr. Pepper lip balm, which I do believe I still harbor at the bottom of a Hello Kitty purse somewhere, but there’s a special place in my heart for the metal roller-ball applicators of yore. (They share rent in that “special place” with all things Lisa Frank.) A sticky-sweet, rolled-on coating of clear gloss, sometimes containing abrasive glitter particles, that smelled like candy and tasted like (and probably was) poison — they just don’t make ‘em like that anymore, by which I mean fun to collect, even more fun to apply, and most importantly, a total status symbol back in ’99. Alas, Estée Lauder is targeting the niche market of women who want to relive the genetically modified strawberry-scented “makeup” of their youth with Pure Color Sheer Roller Gloss, which is essentially roll-on Lip Smackers for Adult Ladies. Genius! I would buy it for the nostalgia factor alone… which is pretty much the only thing this product has going for it, considering they go on completely clear. [The Cut]

Flower lip butter

Never in the million years did I think I’d be recommending you a product sold exclusively at Walmart, renowned big box store of sex discrimination lawsuits and sexist tee shirts. Neither would I have suspected that Drew Barrymore, hippie goddess of love and light, would choose Walmart to exclusively sell her makeup line, Flower. But she did, and I am, and honestly, her Flower lip butter is the best lip product I’ve ever used. Yes, better than the expensive department store lipsticks and drug store lip crayons. It’s the shit. For realz.

I went home from a Flower event with a bag full of goodies to test drive and the quality of all of them is very high. I’ll review them one-by-one, but first up, the lip butter!

Add Pop To Your Pout

Last week, when I was in San Jose for the gymnastics Olympic trials, in addition to, you know, hanging with some of the best athletes in world, I also got to get a private makeup consultation with P&G Beauty’s makeup artist Candace Corey. One of the products she recommended to me, that I just lovvvvved, was CoverGirl’s Natureluxe gloss balm in Peony. First of all, peonies are my favorite flower, but she didn’t know that so it seemed rather fated. Secondly, this gloss balm is perfect for summer because although it looks super bright in the tube, it goes on sheer and doesn’t look heavy. Plus, Natureluxe gloss balm is super moisturizing and has SPF 15 which is good for me because my lips get hella dry. Candace must have sensed how much I liked it because she gave me a tube. Score! Now it’s my go-to summer lip. [$6.79, Amazon]

Run Out Of Breath Mints On Purpose

You can finally stop carrying breath mints with you everywhere you go. And all those lip glosses in your purse? Get rid of them because C.O. Bigelow’s mentha breath freshening lip shine  is the only thing you’ll need. This mint infused lip balm provides a glossy shine that keeps your lips moist while the peppermint oil keeps your breath fresh for hours. Perfect for hot dates (which involve kissing) or long, sunny days at the beach.

I hereby commence the first-ever meeting of the Ladies Whose Lips Are So Thin We’re Afraid Of Wearing Lipstick support group! So far, Amelia and I are the only members, but with the help of our sponsors, both of  us have been making inroads.

Part of my recovery can be attributed to the discovery of my favorite lipstick in the universe, Kate Spade’s Supercalafragilipstick. But at $24 a tube, it’s more of a special occasion lipstick. For everyday wear, I’m crushing on the much-more-broke-ass-mofo-friendly CoverGirl’s Natureluxe Gloss Balm. Keep reading »

Lipstick 101: How To Find The Perfect Bold Lipstick

Figuring out how to wear a bold lip can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not used to wearing lipstick. (Or if you’re basically used to ignoring the fact that you have lips on your face altogether.) The wrong shade can wash you out, or make you look lizard-y. And when you’re wearing a bright, bold lip color you just can’t help but feel so out there in the open.

So that’s why we teamed up with esteemed makeup artist Susana to get a quick lesson on Lipstick 101. What we learned: you don’t have to fear a bold lip. Bright lipsticks can be fun, dramatic and totally sexy!

Makeup Bag: Put Some Spring On Your Lips

Is it still winter? I don’t even know anymore. The calendar says early March, a time of year that’s supposed to be defined by rain, slush, and extreme wind chill, but the weather has been saying 55 degrees and sunny. What?! For all intents and purposes, I have deemed that it is spring. It might as well be, anyway.

You could say I’m in a big hurry to bring out my spring clothes, which may not be the best or most informed decision as this capricious East Coast weather has been known to drop twenty degrees overnight. I’m clinging to my opaque black tights and boots for the time being, but the time has come for spring makeup: I can’t hold off on my hot pinks, eye-searing corals, and glossy nudes any longer. Here are my top picks for spring lip colors, so we can all channel a little bit of May in March.
