Is MTV2′s “Lingerie Football League” Totally Disgusting?

This is not a suitable “Friday Night Lights” replacement. On Friday night, MTV2 will premiere its second season of “Lingerie Football League: Friday Night Football.” The concept is fairly obvious from the title. The LFL consists of 12 teams of female players, with names like the Philadelphia Passion and the Los Angeles Temptation, who play 34 minutes of flag football per epiosde while wearing itty-bitty boy shorts and bra tops. The show’s tagline? “This is truly fantasy football.”

Lingerie Football Could Be The Most Lucrative Women’s “Sport”

Apparently it’s not enough to play at Wimbledon with your bum hanging out, ladies.

Lingerie football, like puppy football, is not a real sport. But three cable networks are interested in broadcasting titillating tackles, according to Mitchell Mortaza, the Lingerie Football League’s founder. And why wouldn’t they want to broadcast it? According to the Orlando Sentinel, the games have the potential, from a business perspective, to be the most lucrative women’s sport — er, “sport.” The fact the women submit head shots for the pleasure of playing in bras, panties and garter belts apparently is negligible. “The women are comfortable once they understand how they’re positioned as athletes,” Mortaza told the Orlando Sentinel. “We don’t see it being an issue.” Yeah, I bet it’s really empowering, too! Female Football Players Clad In Underwear Want To Be Taken Seriously

Sex can sell almost anything in our culture, so football shouldn’t be any different. At least, that’s what the Lingerie Football League, LFL, is banking on. The idea for the LFL was hatched from the “Lingerie Bowl,” a half-time show featuring scantily dressed women that is broadcast during the Super Bowl. The league, which opens its debut season Sept. 4, has 10 teams (with names like San Diego Seduction, Dallas Desire, and Los Angeles Temptation) competing in seven-a-side, full-contact football. The players want to be respected even though they wear sports bras, tiny boyshorts, and protective gear. They say they’re playing real football, regardless of their attire, and those who tried out and couldn’t play didn’t make the cut. Keep reading »
