This past week, my youngest brother came to visit me. His real name is Cuyler, but everyone calls him Bob (for some reason, no one in my family goes by their real name). Bob is 18 now — a solid ten years younger than me — but we’ve always been pretty close, and it was awesome to see him after a couple months of living so far away from each other. Hanging out with my not-so-little brother for a week, I realized that even though I’m the one who’s prone to big sisterly lectures, Bob has probably taught me way more about life than I’ve taught him. Here are five of the best lessons I’ve learned from him over the years… Keep reading »

7 Incredibly Deep Life Lessons From Candy Crush Saga

My name is Amelia and I am a Candy Crush Saga addict. After months of getting invitations to play on Facebook, I finally succumbed to curiosity. Dear God, WHY. I haven’t been this addicted to a game since I entered rehab for my joint Mine Sweeper and Pipe Dream addictions over a decade ago! I close my eyes and I see the Candy Crush playing field. Candy Crush combos infiltrate my dream life. If you guys ever learn that I’ve actually paid for lives or boosters, I hereby give you permission to confiscate my credit card, iPhone and laptop. But luckily this addiction to Candy Crush has not been without its rewards — I have learned a number of vital life lessons simply by playing this game for hours on end. I hope that by sharing them with you, I have made the emotional suffering Candy Crush has caused somehow worthwhile. Keep reading »

My best friend has a hot, super short haircut. Instead of spending a fortune getting it cut at the hairdresser every month, she gets an expensive haircut every six months and supplements that with $14 “cleanups” at her local barber shop. She’s invited me to join her several times by telling me how “amazing” it is. I’ve always replied with, “Not my scene.” To which she’s said, “You’re missing out.” Keep reading »

5 Life Lessons I Learned From My Plants

Nearly two years ago, I wrote about all the reasons why having a plant is better than having a boyfriend. Then, recently, I landed myself an awesome boyfriend who is pretty much always available to listen to me in the way my plants previously did (and before that my childhood dog, Mandy).

Now, begrudgingly, I’m forced to admit that having a boyfriend is slightly better than having a plantfriend. It’s just more edifying to have someone listen to you who talks back with kind words and intelligent insights and also wants to make out with you. (Friends are good for this kind of thing as well — minus the making out — if you’re not with boyfriend at the moment.)

But just because I have a human companion, doesn’t mean that I appreciate the sage wisdom of my plants any less. A big shout out to Liberation, Money Bags, Muffin Top, Spike, and Banana for always being there for me. Here’s what I’ve learned from living with my plantfriends for the last six years, my plantitudes, if you will…

Life Lessons From Tubing
How floating downriver changed Julie and Amelia forever. Read More »

I spent the last week in Maui soaking up the sun with my best friend and it was fabulous. We ate macadamia nut pancakes, watched seven sunsets, and floated for hours. The best part? Our hotel was near a sea turtle habitat, so we got to go snorkeling at a place called Turtle Cove, and we watched a group of 15 turtles swimming in the surf every day. It wasn’t long before these fascinating creatures became my secondary spirit animal (Celine Dion is always #1). Here are five life lessons I learned from sea turtles… Keep reading »

This past weekend, Amelia and I, plus 15 of our friends, went tubing down the Delaware River. Tubing is about my favorite thing in the world. I consider it the best “sport” for lazy people because you can be outside and on the water, but you don’t actually have to do much. And as Amelia and I found out, you can learn a lot from tubing, the river, and hanging with friends in your skivvies.

A few years ago, I got a job working part-time at Starbucks, for the same reason as approximately 75 percent of coffee shop employees: to augment my writing income. The ‘Bux I worked at was a drive-thru store out in the suburbs, and although I’m still trying to figure out whether or not it was a positive experience (sometimes I really miss making perfectly layered caramel macchiatos, other times I’m plagued by nightmares about the espresso machine breaking during the 8 a.m. rush), it was definitely a difficult, fascinating, and educational one. Here are seven life lessons I learned while wearing the famous green apron… Keep reading »

A couple years ago I was feeling lost. I had graduated college, had some money saved up, and I wanted to try something new. I’d been writing a humorous fashion blog for awhile and I’d been toying with the idea of taking the leap from writing funny things to performing funny things. Tina Fey has always been a huge inspiration for me and I remember reading an interview about how improv had changed her life and thinking, Hey, maybe improv would change my life too. I looked up Tina Fey’s bio on Wikipedia and found out she studied improv at The Second City, an acting school and theater in Chicago where many “Saturday Night Live” alums got their start. So I signed up a for a week-long immersion improv class and I bought a plane ticket to Chicago. Keep reading »
