Today’s Lady News: Lesbian Student In KY Attacked By Classmates

  • High school student Cheyenne Williams of McKee, Kentucky, an out lesbian, claims three female classmates kidnapped her and brought her to the woods where they beat her up and tried to push her off a 50-foot cliff. The alleged attack occurred on April 16, which high schools across the country recognize as the “Day of Silence” in a nod to gay and lesbian students. Police say Ashley Sams, 18, Corrinne Schwab, 18, and a 17-year-old female took Williams against her will to Flat Lick Falls, where they tried to push her off a cliff and she fought them off with a stick before running away. The suspects have been charged with kidnapping and attempted murder; police say they don’t have enough evidence to qualify the attack as a hate crime. [CBS News]
  • Eighty schoolgirls in northern Afghanistan are sick after a strange odor enveloped their classroom. Police are investigating whether extremists may have poisoned the school because they oppose girls receiving an education. [ABC News]
  • A court in San Francisco has ruled that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. must face a class-action lawsuit alleging the store discriminates against female employees. All women who have worked at Wal-Mart since 2001 may join in the class-action lawsuit, which Bloomberg News called “the biggest gender-bias case in U.S. history.” [NPR]

Girl On Girl: My Girlfriend’s Family Is Homophobic

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend’s father told her the family is taking a vacation to Maryland this summer. Her immediate response was, “I’m not going.” Desperate to get his very un-family-oriented daughter to participate, he quickly added, “Your girlfriend can come.”

She mentioned this to me on the phone later and, naturally, I was very enthusiastic. The two of us talked about how nice it would be to lie on the beach together, especially at night. We discussed swimming in the ocean and sleeping in every day for a week. By the end of our phone conversation, the two of us had talked so much about the trip, it felt like the trip had already happened.

But things changed when my girlfriend excitedly told her mother that I’d likely be going, too. Keep reading »

Gay Couples To Get Visitation Rights At Most Hospitals

I’m not going to lie, this story makes my eyes tear up. In 2007, Lisa Pond, of Florida, collapsed from a brain aneurysm and a few hours later at the hospital, she died alone, without her kids or the person she’d spent the last 18 years of her life with. Lisa Pond died this way because she was a lesbian.

Yesterday, President Obama called Pond’s former partner, Janice Langbehn, to inform her that he mandated all hospitals that receive Medicare and Medicaid funding — which are most in the country — must extend visitation rights to same-sex couples. This mandate, which should go into effect in a few months, will allow a gay or lesbian partner to not only make medical decisions for their ill or injured loved one, but also to be there during the last moments of their life. In the past, LGBT partners who are not legally married have been refused by hospitals’ “relatives-only” policies. Keep reading »

Out Magazine Lists The Most Influential Gay Men And Women Of The Year

Out Magazine‘s “Power 50” is a list of the most powerful gay peeps in the country. It just dropped, and we’re pretty excited about it. The mag ranks people based on their political clout, pop culture value, wealth and, of course, their personal life. Numero uno on the list was David Geffen, a record exec, producer and all around big shot. He was followed by Anderson Cooper, which surprised me quite a bit because, last time I checked, he’s tight-lipped on the subject on his sexuality. I’m definitely not down with assuming, and I’m pretty sure the mag’s readers were none too pleased, either. But, hey, let’s not give all our attention to the dudes. Corrupt School Board Presents: Constance McMillen’s Decoy Prom!

Remember that time that Ellen gave the super awesome lesbian high-schooler a scholarship and internship after she sued her school district for canceling prom? It looked like maybe the international scrutiny and an ACLU lawsuit had worked and Constance McMillen‘s school agreed to throw a parent-sponsored prom in the cafeteria. But no, it was a trap. While McMillen, her girlfriend, and seven friends showed up to decoy prom, her classmates were partying at a different location planned by the school district. As Gawker summed it up, “Basically, a bunch of grownups may have staged an elaborate ruse so the gay girl and her gay lesbian girlfriend and all their totally homo friends could stand around one place looking like chumps.” Someone even tracked down a classmate’s prom photos, which proved there was, in fact, a secret prom Constance was not invited to. I’m so utterly sickened by these awful hick people and their evil hick scheming. I had no idea people were still so close-minded and openly discriminating. Maybe Constance can sue them again and start a fund to get discriminated students out of their school district and into real cities where this kind of thing doesn’t happen? Keep reading »

I am the most disappointing bi-curious girl ever. My first kiss was with a girl at age 15, over a game of spin-the-bottle. But in the decade-plus since then, I have failed to act on any of the moments where I’m in close quarters with someone I am taken with. Mississippi Judge Rules In Favor Of Lesbian Student Over Canceled Prom

A Mississippi judge ruled yesterday that Itawamba Agricultural High School violated a lesbian student’s rights by forbidding her from bringing her girlfriend to prom and wearing a tuxedo. Constance McMillen, 18, came out of the closet as gay in the 8th grade and asked school officials in December and February of this school year if she could bring her 16-year-old girlfriend to the April 2 prom. Itawamba not only said same-sex dates were not allowed, but a female student could not wear a tux. When the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi took up McMillen’s cause, the school just canceled prom entirely. Keep reading »

Girl On Girl: If Only My Parents Had Talked To Me About Sexuality When I Was Little

The first time I questioned my sexuality was when I was 12 years old. My family and I were in Las Vegas for my uncle’s wedding. Twelve was an awkward age because I was boob height, meaning not tall enough to look people in the eyes, but short enough so that it seemed everywhere I looked there were boobs, boobs, boobs. If you’ve ever been to Las Vegas you’ll know that in addition to the huge casinos, ginormous buffets and larger-than-life hotels, Sin City also seems to draw particularly busty women. It’s hot there and they walk around in plunging necklines and strapless dresses and wear tiny bikinis by the pool. So I was walking around at boob-height in a city where cleavage rules and I realized, to my horror, that I liked it. What’s more, all these women with their breasts hanging out turned me on.
