There is a commercial that plays often in the New York area for a local, super upscale, chic-chic bowling alley. In the commercial there’s a pretty girl wearing hot-ass leather shorts and a high-collared shirt going on a bowling date with a very attractive floppy-haired dude and I always think, Wow, that bowling alley is really going for the cool hipster contingent. And then I think that perhaps that term has been angled and destroyed and co-opted by the mainstream so much that it’s actually meaningless. And then I think: I really need to turn off the TV. Anyway! These Alexander Wang leather mini-shorts with lapel pockets pretty much approximate the ones the cute girl in the commercial wears, but will these shorts land you a floppy-haired man of your dreams? When we last left off, the leather shorts debate was still fully raging. So when we saw these “skirted leather shorts” by Ellery, we had to wonder if they would attract or disgust pro-leather shorts wearers. Leather Shorts: Love ‘Em Or Leave “Em?

It was almost a year ago exactly when we covered the leather shorts trend. However, over the last year, the styles and options have grown quite a bit. Quilted, speckled, high-waisted and low, leather shorts are showing up everywhere this fall — and everyone has a different opinion of them.

It appears there is no middle ground with leather shorts — they just don’t have a “meh-ness” to them. We’ve heard everything from “fug” to “love” to “They look good on models.” I love the way Annika would style them: “I’m so team leather shorts…

I do like the idea of leather shorts worn with tights and super sexy platforms during the winter. I’d wear a pair with a blazer or anorak.

” Kate and Simcha both love the idea of leather, but they’d rather stay in the skirt realm. Me? I love ‘em so much I went out and grabbed a pair. Styled them with a sheer shirt buttoned all the way up and a hard shouldered blazer; and you know what? My man loves them. What do YOU think?

The Lederhosen Look Is So Hot (& Sweaty!) For Spring

It’s a trend we’ve naysayed here on the site before (see our “Crazy Spring Trends To Avoid” post ), but the fashion gods have spoken, and the leather shorts trend has officially caught on. While we’ve seen some interesting options from the houses of Chloe, Pucci and Alexander Wang, department store buyers are ordering up the look from Alice + Olivia, The Row and other designers like they’re, ahem, going out of style (which let’s face it, they inevitably will). But right now, it’s the lederhosen’s shining moment, and you can even find a pair for sale at Zara for $99, which is relatively cheap compared to the $3,100 price tag attached to this (pretty trashy-looking, we think) pair by Chrome Hearts, above. While one shop owner insists the shorts are an investment piece, “like a leather jacket,” and others say it’s a work-friendly look (!?), we still have our doubts. Keep reading »

Leather Skirts Maybe … But Leather Shorts?

Prompted by the revival of leather skirts, we decided to dig around a bit more to see what else is out there in leather land, and here’s what we found: shorts. Not hot pants but loose-fitting shorts like this Robert Rodriguez pair, which could be a regular style, except they’re made out of leather. Puzzling. Not sure how you would rock these seeing as you can’t really wear them when it’s hot and when it’s cold you’d have to don tights underneath.
