Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a Philadelphia doctor whose clinic gained attention for his criminal performance of late-term abortions, was found guilty yesterday of three counts of first-degree murder. He had been accused of killing four babies and one woman, but was found guilty of only three of the babies’ deaths.

Gosnell, 72, operated an illegally-run clinic in Philly that provided late-term abortions to low-income women. He was accused of killing live babies after delivery with scissors, as opposed to terminating the pregnancies during standard late-term abortion procedure. Gosnell’s case became a lightening rod for anti-abortion activists who attempted to paint Gosnell as the standard in abortion care. Similarly, abortion rights supporters underscored the reason abortion needs to be safe and legal is to keep patients safe from doctors like him.  Keep reading »

Anti-Abortion Group Live Action Debuts More “Undercover” Videos

  • The anti-abortion group Live Action today debuted more videos filmed “undercover” at abortion clinics, including ones in Washington, D.C., and the Bronx, NY, claiming they perform “illegal and inhuman practices.” Live Action sent women to clinics where they secretly taped their conversations about a hypothetical, rare late-term abortion with various staff members; to hear Live Action tell it, these doctors are butchering live babies. Live Action videos are always heavily edited — much like reality TV — to make them appear say what Live Action wants them to convey. And what do they want to convey, really? Less than one percent of abortions are performed after 21 weeks. Plus, abortions are legal after 24 weeks in New York State only if a woman’s life is at risk.   • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to update abortion laws in New York by removing restrictions on late term abortions (past 24 weeks), which have previously been available only if a woman’s life is at risk.  His proposal also includes allowing licensed practitioners to perform abortions, and changing the regulation of abortion to the state’s public health law rather than the penal codes.   [New York Times]

Today’s Lady News: Meet The Mom Who Chose An Abortion At 29 Weeks

  • Meet Dana Weinstein of Rockville, Maryland, the mother of a young son who had a late-term abortion when she learned the daughter she was pregnant with was missing part of her brain. At 29 weeks into her pregnancy, a sonogram revealed that “Baby W” would have physical and mental impairments for life, if she even survived birth. Because she had difficulty finding a doctor who could perform a late-term abortion in the D.C.-area, she had to fly to Boulder, Colorado, and stay there for one week; she racked up over $17K in medical bills, plus airfare and the hotel. Weinstein bravely spoke to Mother Jones about her late-term abortion because she is concerned about how increasing assaults on reproductive rights could affect women and families who befall the same tragedy that she has. Slain Abortion Provider Dr. Tiller’s Clinic Closed Permanently

The Wichita clinic formerly run by Dr. George Tiller, who was murdered by anti-choice crusader Scott Roeder on May 31, has closed permanently. As a result, the closest abortion provider for Tiller’s patients will be a three hour drive both ways to Overland Park. It is unclear if that clinic, the Center For Women’s Health, can provide late-term third-trimester abortions like Tiller’s did.

A 51-year-old anti-abortion activist is in custody in Wichita, KS, after he allegedly shot and killed Dr. George Tiller, 67. Tiller, who had provided abortions to women for over 30 years, was gunned down in the foyer of his church while he passed out the church bulletin. [NY Times]

During last night’s final presidential debate, in addition to stroking Joe The Plumber’s ego, John McCain used oh-so-retro air quotes to emphasize his stance on abortion and abortion legislation.

Just again, the example of the eloquence of Senator Obama. He’s [for] health for the mother. You know, that’s been stretched by the pro-abortion movement in America to mean almost anything. That’s the extreme pro-abortion position, quote, ‘health.’

All the air quotes really did was call my attention to that notion — the health of the mother — and what that really means. By the tone of McCain’s fingers, you’d think that means when the woman has a cold, she can have a late-term abortion.
