So what’s the difference between saying that the 2012 Pirelli calendar features a boatload of naked models looking smoking hot, and saying the 2012 Pirelli calendar features a crapton of nude models looking friggin’ sexy? Well, according to the art historian Kenneth Clark:

To be naked is to be deprived of our clothes, and the word implies some of the embarrassment most of us feel in that condition. The word “nude,” on the other hand, carries, in educated usage, no uncomfortable overtone. The vague image it projects into the mind is not of a huddled and defenseless body, but of a balanced, prosperous, and confident body: the body re-formed.

And all this is to say that though they may look naked, the girls in the 2012 Pirelli calendar — shot by Mario Sorrenti — are nude. But you don’t really care, do you? You just want to see what Kate Moss looks like without all of her clothes on. Well, fine, so do we. But beware, this gallery is full of boobs (so many boobs!), is pretty full frontal, and entirely NSFW.

Do These Women Look Like Plus-Size Models To You?

Meet the new faces of “plus-sized” modeling. This week Ford Modeling Agency unveiled Ford+ Models, its new division of plus-sized models meant to turn the industry on its head. According to the agency, Ford+ models range in size from 8 to 18, and are an attempt to widen the playing field of what it means to be beautiful. After all, when models like Lara Stone (who is a size 4) are considered “too fat” to be real models, it’s clear that the modeling industry’s notions of beauty have grown very, very narrow. Said Gary Dakin, who’s running Ford’s plus division: “There are better clients, jobs, photographers, rates, etc.,” for plus-sized models. “The girls have evolved too … they are challenged now more than ever to be better and they challenge the industry right back.”

In Praise Of The Eyebrow-Free Face

I certainly could never do it, but I do love the otherworldly, sort of feral look that shaving one’s eyebrows gives the face. Take model Guinevere Van Seenus in this Vogue Italia editorial shot by Tim Walker — her brows are so faded out they look nonexistent, and give her face a wild, alien quality. Take a good look at this Calvin Klein billboard ad, starring supermodel Lara Stone. Notice anything a bit naughty about it (other than the fact that she’s in a tit-baring bra and underwear)? Some savvy media critics say that the ad subliminally spells out a swear word. If you start at the legs of the table in the background, which form an F, and then follow the curve of Stone’s underwear line, which makes a U, to its logical CK end, well, you see where we’re going with this. Australia Bans Lara Stone’s Calvin Klein Jeans Ads For Allegedly Promoting Rape

Australia‘s Advertising Standards Bureau has asked Calvin Klein to remove billboards from the autumn/winter 2010 Jeans X ad campaign after it received 50+ complaints that the images glamorize rape and violence. Three of the ads, which are to be taken down from billboards in Sydney and Melbourne, show model Lara Stone surrounded by shirtless men with her head laying in one man’s lap while another appears to be climbing over her. While it suggests group sex or a foursome, it’s not necessarily violent. Why does anything that implies group sex often interpreted to also imply rape? I’m sensitive to the glamorization of sexual violence, too, but this one’s a stretch, Aussies. What do you think?

We may never know who started the bleached brows trend, but it seems like it’s everywhere you cock an eyebrow these days. There’s no higher profile practitioner than model Lara Stone, seen here in an editorial from the latest issue of Love magazine. Her barely-there brows are as much her trademark as her gap-toothed smile. With a little Googling, you can learn how to bleach your brows at home, although we don’t recommend it. Lara Stone Suing French Playboy For Publishing Naked Photos

If you don’t know who model Lara Stone is — the just-married, gap-toothed blond has modeled for Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Versace, and pretty much every other fashion house of note on the planet at this point — you may remember her as the girl I’d go gay for. The photo that prompted me to say that, which you see here, was from a super-sexy series of photos that appeared in the French version of Playboy. Wow, I thought, how open minded of her. She walks the runway for Miu Miu and strips down for Playboy. In actuality, though, those naked photos of Stone, taken by photographer Greg Lotus, were published in Playboy France without the model’s permission, and now she’s suing. “Playboy had no right to publish these unauthorized photographs. It’s not the kind of publication I would ever choose to appear in,” Stone has since stated. “I feel I have no option but to take steps to protect my reputation.” Still, more models now than ever are posing naked. Is this idea of distinguishing between “artful nudes” and “soft-core porn,” or however you’d like to put it, really appropriate anymore? Apparently the bride changed from the white wedding dress she wore during the ceremony into a party dress before making merry with guests like Tom Ford and fellow model Lily Donaldson.
