  • If I could go back in time and stop little five-year-old Sarah from supporting Mattel, I would.  The company told mother Karen Braithwaite – who had appealed to the company to make party supplies featuring a Black Barbie – that they would not do so because it’s not profitable.  COME ON, MATTEL.  I guess I’m not surprised, but still, it’s disappointing. • The Senate Criminal Justice Committee voted to include gay teens in its “Romeo and Juliet” law which protects young heterosexual couples over the age of 14 from being charged with sex crimes.  Though the law faces a larger hurdle to pass in the main body of the Texas State Senate, the removal of “opposite sex” in the law’s language marks a big step. [Huffington Post]
  • Alaska’s state senate passed a bill narrowing who qualifies to have Medicaid cover an abortion.  Currently, the law covers all “medically necessary” procedures, but if this bill becomes law it would limit Medicaid coverage to those who have suffered rape or incest, or those who are at “serious risk” from continuing a pregnancy, according to KToo.org. birth controll pills

While there are many positive side effects from taking a once-daily birth control pill — no more heavy periods, no more acne, less intense menstrual cramps — the main purpose, as the name suggests, is to prevent pregnancies.  It is just one of many forms of contraception used by those who are not ready to have children.

Yet those on the Pill can attest that the potential for human error is high.  The Pill’s effectiveness is reduced if a dose is skipped or even taken outside a specific margin of time.  The Guttmacher Institute reports that 54 percent of women who have had abortions say they’ve used some form of contraception (usually the Pill or a condom), and of once-daily pill users who had abortions, 76 percent said they used them inconsistently. At last, there might be hope for the fair-weather BC pill user! Keep reading »

Good News: The Senate Passed The Violence Against Women Act (Again)

Today's Lady News photo
  • The Senate passed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act by a wide majority of 78-22 yet again.  The measure first  passed in 1994 was up for reauthorization in 2012; however, in April 2012 the Senate passed a similar bill, which failed in the House of Representatives due to measures added to extend protections to Native American women, undocumented immigrants and same-same sex couples.  According to Politico, the 2013 bill has minimal changes besides dropping a portion that would “grant U visas to undocumented immigrant women who had been abused.”  Here’s hoping this finally passes the House! [Politico]
  • Reportedly there is some pressure from Republicans to get VAWA passed:  Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor were sent a letter by 17 Congressmen from their own caucus urging them to “immediately reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.” [NYMag.com Huffington Post]
  • France’s legalization of same-sex marriage moved one step further: a measure extending marriage and adoption rights to gay couples passed the National Assembly 329-229. [CNN] Keep reading »
