So Rad: 4 Women Fronted Nirvana At Last Night’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony

4 Women Fronted Nirvana At Last Night's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony
Watch Lorde Sing "All Apologies"

This is awesome. Last night, Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, just days after the 20 year anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death from suicide, and when the remaining members of the band took the stage to perform, they were joined by four female rockers filling Cobain’s shoes/vocals. Joan Jett, St. Vincent, Kim Gordon and Lorde each joined bassist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear on stage to sing a song from Nirvana’s catalogue, and I have a feeling Kurt, a feminist, would have loved it. The RRHOF ceremony won’t be televised until May 31 (on HBO), but some video has already leaked of a few of the performances, including Lorde singing “All Apologies” (above). Not only that, but after the ceremony, Nirvana played a secret show at a club in Brooklyn — check out video of the band, plus Joan Jett, slaying “Smells Like Teen Spirit” after the jump! Nirvana Musical Is “Very Likely,” Says Courtney Love

  • Courtney Love said she and Kurt Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean have agreed that a “respectful but honest” Nirvana musical is “very likely.” I’m still going to take everything Love says with a grain of salt, especially since it’s unclear whether the other members of Nirvana would be so on board. Got half a million dollars lying around? Because Kurt Cobain’s childhood home is for sale. Cobain’s mom, Wendy O’Connor, is sharing childhood photos of a smiling, youthful Kurt taken inside the house to help sell it. The home, located in Aberdeen, Washington, is being marketed through a Beverly Hills real estate agency. It’s listed for $500,000 — which is over seven times its worth. His family has alluded that they’d be interested in a partnership to turn the house into a museum. Cobain lived there from ages two to nine and again in his teenage years. He had said his childhood there was a happy one — well, besides his parents’ divorce, which also took place there. His old bedroom still has the band names he etched on the wall decades ago, and even his mattress is still in the house’s crawlspace. [People]

"Here we are now, entertain us!"

This one’s an oldie but a goodie: Riot grrl hero and fellow Colonel Mustard fan Kathleen Hanna is the woman responsible (in small part, anyway) for the epic Nirvana song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” In this clip from her 2010 performance at Joe’s Pub in NYC, Hanna tells the story of hanging out with Kurt, getting really wasted, and coming up with the now-classic line, which she happened to drunkenly spray paint on the walls of Kurt’s rented apartment. The 10-minute performance covers the beginnings of Nirvana, Bikini Kill, and just how hard Kathleen had to work to keep her band together. It’s worth it, if for no other reason than to see Hanna belt out “Teen Spirit” in her trademark girlish lilt. [Dangerous Minds]

Kurt Cobain would have been 46 today. Do you remember where you were when you found out he’d killed himself? I was in high school art class, likely making some awful riot grrl-inspired art. I liked Nirvana, but at that point considered myself a little too cool to get super into them. They were soooo commercial, after all. And I fancied myself some kind of indie rock/riot grrl/zine-writing nightmare.

But fan or not, for those of us that exist in that murky era — not Generation X and not Generation Y — Cobain is and always will be a powerful arbiter of youthful dissent.

Courtney Love

Courtney Love is working on a movie or Broadway musical about her relationship with Kurt Cobain set to Nirvana music, according to none other than Britney Spears’ ex-manager Sam Lufti. Lufti is currently suing Spears and her parents for defamation and explained in court yesterday how he’s been keeping busy.  ”[Love and I] are currently working on a possible motion picture or Broadway musical based on the Nirvana catalogue, based on [Love's] life and Kurt Cobain’s,” he explained. Outside the courtroom Lufti clarified the musical/movie is just “an idea,” which I suppose it has to be for now because Love is on bad terms with both her daughter Frances Bean Cobain and Cobain’s ex-bandmates. But hey, if creating a musical that might never get made is keeping Courtney Love busy and off Twitter, I say go on with your bad self.  [Guardian UK] [Photo: Bauer Griffin]

Frances Bean Cobain Is A Chip Off The Ol’ Block

The older Frances Bean Cobain gets and the more she comes into her own, the more, I think, she resembles her parents. Dad Kurt Cobain’s pink hair and mom Courtney Love’s full, darkly-painted lips … this photo of her is like taking a time machine back to 1991. Sigh. [Photo (center): Fame/Flynet]

Conspiracy Theory: Paul Ryan Cribbed From Nirvana

We’re going to suggest taking this one with a shaker full of salt, but the Internet is buzzing with accusations that Paul Ryan stole the kinda-vaguely touching anecdote he told about his daughter during last night’s debate from, of all people, Kurt Cobain. In response to a question about abortion, Ryan told the story of how he’d nicknamed his daughter Liza “Bean” because when he saw his wife’s first ultrasound “our little baby was in the shape of a bean.” Read more…

Nobody Puts Kurt Cobain In The Corner

Smells Like Teen Spirit?

Back in the day, MTV asked that Kurt Cobain effectively sing along to the pre-recorded tracks during one of Nirvana’s “live” performances on the network. But he wasn’t into the idea of faking it their way. So he gave them vocals — only not the vocals you might expect. Enjoy this rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” featuring Kurt mimicking Ian Curtis or Morrissey. [YouTube]
