For starters, “Bridesmaids” is called a raunchy comedy, which apparently translates to “les comedies pee-pee, ca-ca coo” or something in French. And then somehow the interview devolves into a discussion about possible film plots in which farting is the main premise, because the interviewer, apparently, would watch an entire film about passing wind. “Bridesmaids” Kicks Ass And Takes Names At The Box Office
We can do it, ladies! The Kristen Wiig/Maya Rudolph comedy “Bridesmaids” blew the roof off all expectations, raking in $24.4 million at the box office on opening weekend — the most important barometer in all of Hollywood. While “Thor” came in #1 at the box office this weekend, “Bridesmaids” followed at #2. People who care about lady-issues, such as why only a handful of women are prominent in comedy and why movies with all-female casts are often denigrated as “chick flicks,” were waiting with bated breath to see if “Bridesmaids” succeeded. The fact that it did — and that everyone agrees it’s smart and uproariously funny — sends a signal to studios to invest in more female-led comedies. Sacha Baron Cohen’s New Movie Is Based On Saddam Hussein’s Romance Novel
Sacha Baron Cohen is all about controversy. I mean, it takes balls to kiss another man in a cage fighting ring and start a near riot of fans outside the wires. But Sacha’s new project, “The Dictator,” is a little different. The movie’s source material is Zabibah and the King. Yes, the romance novel written by Saddam Hussein. The story is about a nice, sweet ruler who falls in love with a woman who is married to a horrifyingly abusive man. The book is an allegory—the ruler is, of course, Saddam and the abusive husband is the mean ol’ US of A. Sacha will play the Sadaam role in this one. And three ladies have read for the part of the woman he loves—Anna Faris, Kristen Wiig and Gillian Jacobs of the majorly underrated show “Community.” What do you think—will this movie be great or tacky? “Bridesmaids”: Cinematical Genius Or Pink Fluff?
A while back, I remember asking myself, “Could Judd Apatow curate a group of women the same way he works magic with his usual guys? Or is his humor purely dude-like?” Well, it appears that he is now taking a stab at a female-focused movie, “Bridesmaids.” At first, I was a bit appalled that the female Apatow movie would, of course, be about a woman going crazy over her wedding. But now that I’m reading more about it, I’m thinking it will be much, much, much better than a “Bride Wars” redux. The movie is written by Kristen Wiig, which already makes it that much cooler. And it stars Kristen alongside Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and Rose Byrne—all ladies I love.

“Saturday Night Live” To Air Second “Women Of SNL” On November 1
After a successful ladyflower extravaganza hosted by Betty White last spring, on Monday, November 1, “Saturday Night Live” will air yet another ode to the vag. The “Women of SNL” special will blend both new and old, mixing classic clips with new material from Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph and others. Yay … I think? I would watch two hours of these ladies clipping their toenails. (Call me, Tina.) But at some point, “SNL” should not need these specials. The show should just have lots of funny women comics and writers all the time. Hire a funny black lady so damn Kenan Thompson doesn’t keep having to wear a dress and lipstick, you hear?
