Derek Lam is the latest big name designer to collaborate with Kohl’s as part of their DesigNation project. His bright, breezy spring collection was inspired by a trip to Rio de Janeiro, documented in this video that has in turn inspired me to start frantically checking airfare prices to Brazil. His Rio-ready designs are priced between $36 and $88 and will be available in stores and online April 5th. Can’t wait to check out these pieces in person! [Kohl's]
Designer collaborations with fast-fashion department stores make me sad. I love them in theory — my favorite big ticket aspirational brands producing clothing similar to their runway designs at a tangible price point sounds like a dream come true, but the reality of the situation isn’t nearly so fanciful. Waiting in long lines and fighting with other, more aggressive shoppers and prospective eBay sellers only to emerge with, like, two things you didn’t even want in the wrong size is not my idea of a satisfying retail experience (though I will wade through hell and high water to elbow my way into a J. Crew sample sale). It strikes a vague, aching chord in my heart to see the pieces from the designer-cum-discount collections, knowing full well I am not under any circumstances going to march my lazy ass out to Target at eight in the morning the day it’s released. If you’ve turned on the TV at all in the past couple of weeks you’ve surely seen the “Shop to Win” commercials from Kohl’s. If not, here’s the general premise: a legendary female athlete (swimmer Dara Torres, skier Lindsey Vonn, and soccer star Mia Hamm have all been featured) sits in an empty room and talks about the intense experience of competing at a sport’s highest level. “When I’m out there, I am totally in the zone,” says Torres. “It’s a real adrenaline rush,” says Vonn. “I get pretty excited when I score,” says Hamm. But wait, there’s a twist! These women aren’t talking about sports… Keep reading »
Well, I suppose we should have known this was coming, as much as we may have wished that Rebecca Black’s horrible “Friday” was but a bitter, distant memory. The song, which became a sensation this summer for hell only knows what reason, is not being used by Kohl’s to advertise their Black Friday sale, the day after Thanksgiving. I shudder to think of how many extra dollars Rebecca Black suddenly has to spend as a result of this deal.

Lauren Conrad‘s latest attempt at designing clothes, called LC Lauren Conrad, is now available exclusively at Kohl’s. We weren’t fans of Lauren’s first try since we abhor jersey fabric, especially when it’s priced a gillion times higher than Forever 21, but some of these new clothes aren’t bad. After the jump, the five pieces from LC Lauren Conrad that we might wear (though we’d have to lie about who designed them). Keep reading »
