Photographer Dina Goldstein Imagines Barbie’s Life If Ken Liked Men

Back in the day, Ken was always a hot commodity whenever my friends and I fought over whose Barbie would be the lucky lady that day. Turns out, Ken might not even be into plastic boobs, anyway. In a four-room set she built in an art gallery for a piece called “In The Dollhouse,” photographer Dina Goldstein captures Barbie and Ken’s failing marriage as Ken tries to sort out his own sexuality in an unseen lifestyle within the Dream House walls. Photograher Hayden Wood spent a lot of time as a retoucher and graphic artist, which is probably why his photos of models posed as Barbie and Ken are so eerie. His series, Living Dolls, transforms real people into plastic dolls, sans expression, emotion or proper proportions. [Flavorwire]

Sarah Haney Casts A Troubling Dark Shadow Over Barbie And Ken

Barbie Vs. Reality

Barbie is recognizable for many reasons, not the least of which is her long blonde hair and warped 39-18-33 measurements, but photographer Sarah Haney has taken that impenetrable plastic smile and put an entirely different spin on it. The photo series presents the familiar doll in some frankly unfamiliar situations, like being apprehended by the police, stripping for money, and nursing a hangover. The black and white, grainy film-still quality of the images lends a haunting, overcast vibe that doesn’t spare Ken, either: he drinks alone at night, has affairs, and dresses in women’s clothing. It’s fascinating to see the childhood toy depicted in a way that makes her beatific smile seem all too eerie. See a few more after the jump and at the link. [Huffington Post] Keep reading »

Wait, A Real Life Barbie Movie Is Happening?

Every time I watch the new “90210,” I have a very distracting thought—Trevor Donovan, who plays Teddy on the show, looks life a walking, talking version of Ken. I mean, give the man some hair gel and he is good to go. So I was highly amused today when I heard that he had met with producers about the possibility of playing everyone’s favorite plastic hunk without junk in a live-action movie. My next reaction was—wait, someone’s making a live-action Barbie movie?

Apparently, the answer is yes. Keep reading »

Barbie And Ken Are Back Together

Thank you, Cupid, for this Valentine’s Day miracle. After breaking up in 2004, Barbie and Ken have decided to get back together. Yesterday, Barbie, who apparently has a Facebook page even though she’s made of sculpted plastic, wrote a status update that read, “Who knows … maybe I’ll have a Valentine this year.” Then this morning, she changed her status to “In a Relationship.” Keep reading »

Sweet Talkin’ Ken Is Barbie’s Bitch

At last, a man who says everything you want him to say! Meet Mattel’s Sweet Talkin’ Ken doll ($31), who records five seconds of your voice and plays it back in a deep baritone. Barbie and her boy toy split ages ago, but I’m sure they’ll get back together as soon as Barbie realizes she can totally make Sweet Talkin’ Ken her bitch. Repeat after me, Sweet Talkin’ Ken: “You look like you need a foot massage!”; “Don’t worry, I’ll take the garbage out”; “Sure, I’ll go down on you while you watch ‘Real Housewives!” Sigh. If only we could program men in real life this way. [Mattel via Outblush] Keep reading »

Ken Gets A Reality Show. Whitney Port Hosts?

“The City” is dunzo, but Whitney Port is moving onto bigger and better things. You know, like hosting an online reality series about … wait for it … Barbie‘s hunkahunka burnin’ love, Ken. The eight-episode series on Hulu.com will be called “Genuine Ken: The Search for the Great American Boyfriend” and features eight guys competing in challenges to see who’s the best “boyfriend for every occasion.” They must show off their Ken-like qualities by dazzling us with their fashion sense, romancing a lady, and—because this is Ken we are talking about—surfing. Yes, surfing. Presumably, Whitney is the lucky lady who gets to judge each of these Romeos on their boyfriend skillz; never mind that the real Ken broke up with Barbie around Valentine’s Day 2004. Minor detail, right? In my opinion, Heidi Montag would have been a much better human Barbie doll to find the perfect Ken. [Variety] Keep reading »

Could Mattel’s Japanese Barbie And Ken Be Any More Stereotypical?

A geisha girl and a samurai warrior: these are the stereotypes Mattel used for Japanese Ken and Barbie dolls. Barbie is dressed as a geisha with lotus blossoms in her hair, a gold fan, and some gladiator heels which are badass-looking, but I’m thinking not particularly Japanese. Ken is dressed as a bare-chested samurai warrior with a small ponytail and a long sword. An ex-boyfriend who went to grad school in Japan called the Japanese Ken doll, quote, “pure Fu Manchu stereotype” — minus that nefarious mustache, of course. Surprise, surprise, Mattel has a long history of representing their Japanese Barbies as geishas. Keep reading »

Move Over, Barbie: Ken Doll Models For Esquire

Barbie had a million jobs, but did we ever really know what Ken did? With that head of hair, of course he’s a model. This month, Ken is tricked out in teeny, tiny men’s fall fashions for Esquire UK. We pity the assistant who tailored that miniature Gucci duffle bag! [Esquire UK] Keep reading »

Ken’s Dream House And Inferiority Complex

I’ve always had questions about the Ken doll. What’s his relationship with Barbie anyway? Does he like men or women? What’s up with the ascot? Where did he get all the money for his rad car? Well, this video promo for “Toy Story 3″ doesn’t answer any of those questions, but it certainly makes the famous doll look like a diva. But I guess you are bound to have issues when you have a plastic void where your manhood should be. Keep reading »
