New York city performer Amanda Trusty is no stranger to the scrutiny the entertainment industry feels entitled to when it comes to women’s bodies. In a (semi-NSFW) burlesque performance at a benefit for Hawaii Island Gay Pride, Amanda refuses to take that criticism any longer. Set to Katy Perry’s “Roar,” she finds a way to let it all go as she literally peels off hurtful words like “cellulite,” “fat” and “suck it in” that have gotten in the way of the joy performing should bring. I have never felt more empowered (and misty-eyed) just by watching someone dance! Read more thoughts from this amazing lady on her blog. Keep being awesome, Amanda! I wouldn’t blame anyone for being sick of the discussion around the word “feminist.” The conversation is extremely fucking overwrought, when it shouldn’t be. I agree with Joss Whedon, who says in the video above, that you either believe that women are human beings equal to and deserving of the same opportunities and respect as men, or you don’t. But Whedon said something else when he spoke earlier this week for Equality Now at an event called “Make Equality Reality.” He said that he hates the word “feminist.” Keep reading »
Don’t laugh, but “Beetlejuice” is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s got everything, and by everything I mean humor, horror, and Alec Baldwin. The film is fundamentally perfect … so naturally, more than two decades later, Hollywood is all like, “time for a sequel!” Michael Keaton, who starred as the titular character in the 1988 original, divulged to TMZ that “they” do indeed have plans to revisit the movie. However. (Fellow “Beetlejuice” fanatics, brace yourselves.) Keaton touched on the fact that Katy Perry is reportedly a fan by affirming that he would be more than open to co-starring with her in a sequel. “I’d do anything with Katy Perry. I love Katy Perry,” Keaton responded. KATY PERRY? IN “BEETLEJUICE”? This, my friends, is where childhood memories — and foolish dreams of successful sequels — go to die. Lydia Deetz forever!!!! “[A] lot of people see me as a role model, but I’d like to kind of turn that around and say I appreciate that but I’d like to be seen as an inspiration. Because a role model, I think, will fail you. I mean, I couldn’t tell kids when it’s time for them to try things or do things. I mean, that’s not my role. But, you know, it’s funny. I do see myself becoming this, whatever, inspiration out of default right now, ’cause it’s such a strange world. Like females in pop — everybody’s getting naked. I mean, I’ve been naked before, but I don’t feel like I have to always get naked to be noticed. But it’s interesting to see … I’m not talking about anyone in particular. I’m talking about all of them. I mean, it’s, like, everybody’s so naked. It’s, like, put it away. We know you’ve got it. I got it too. I’ve taken it off for — I’ve taken it out here and there. And I’m not necessarily judging. I’m just saying sometimes it’s nice to play that card, but also it’s nice to play other cards. And I know I have that sexy card in my deck, but I don’t always have to use that card.”
It’s so hard to know what to make of this interview that Katy Perry did with NPR.
Here’s my conflict, after the jump: Keep reading »
Robert Pattinson and Katy Perry have long denied ever dating, but this recently uploaded YouTube video from 2008 lends credence to the rumor that Rob’s sparkly vampire peen has made Katy roar. Watch in grainy, fuzzy detail as Rob and Katy sing Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love To You.” At one point, Katy even sits on Rob’s lap OMG. Prepare yourself, Twihards and California Gurls. [YouTube]
