Did you watch the premiere of “American Horror Story: Coven” last night? What did you think? While I thought this first episode was more brutal than scary (um, that gang rape scene was so upsetting), I am excited about this season’s potential, given that it’s based on real life events and people. In fact, Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie, played by the incredible Kathy Bates (clip above), is a real person who actually existed and did many of the vile, deranged and cruel things we can expect to see more of as the season progresses. After the jump, let’s get to know the 1830′s socialite turned serial killing slave torturer! Keep reading »
Mark your calendars: October 9th is the debut of “American Horror Story: Coven,” the third season of the campy, terrifying and highly watchable FX show. “Coven” is set in New Orleans at a big ol’ Southern-style mansion that appears to be a school or home for young witches. Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Taissa Farmiga will return from past seasons, while Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett are joining the cast for what promises to be some badass witchery. Wiccans, please just let us have this one, okay?
Adorable Rookie mag EIC Tavi Gevinson has taken on a new role — that of actress extraordinaire. Here, she lends her voice to the main character, a tentative medical student who begins dissecting a cadaver only to have it come alive. Gevinson narrates the whole film, and shares credits with Kathy Bates and Christopher Lloyd. Not too shabby for a non-actress. Oh, and, she also contributes a couple songs to the soundtrack, voicing Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold” and Pet Shop Boys’ “Heart.” [Vimeo]
It seems like a lot of actresses over 40 are stripping naked for roles these days. Sandra Bullock did it in “The Proposal,” Marisa Tomei got nakey in “The Wrestler” and “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead,” Mary-Louise Parker took it all off on “Weeds,” Diane Keaton stripped in “Something’s Gotta Give,” and Kathy Bates went sans clothes in “About Schmidt.” What’s up with these relative oldsters getting undressed for the big and little screens? Opens Fri. June 26th
Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates and Rupert Friend
I’m fairly pop culture literate, working for The Frisky and all, but I hadn’t heard a single thing about the movie, “Chéri,” starring Michelle Pfeiffer, until I was invited to a screening.
After I saw the flick, about a aging prostitute in the early 1900s who is in love with a younger man, I wondered if maybe the lack of promotion for “Chéri” might have something to do with the subject matter: Historical Drama and Older Woman Having Sex. Not a robot or an explosion — summer movie staples — to be found! Keep reading »
