Tesco Knocks Off Kate Middleton’s Engagement Dress For $25

Another day, another royal wedding knockoff: The European chain store Tesco (like an American Kmart) has quickly brought a cheapo replica of princess bride Kate Middleton‘s engagement dress to the shelves. Kate’s royal blue dress from the designer Issa cost roughly $630, while the lighter blue, shorter-sleeved Tesco version is a mere $25. I don’t really think the knockoff looks anything like the original. But then again, neither do those copycat engagement rings. Who Pays For The Royal Wedding?

When many American couples are planning a wedding, tradition dictates the father of the bride foots all or most of the bill. Sure, Kate Middleton‘s parents are self-made millionaires from their mail order party supply company, Party Pieces. But that’s nothing on Prince William‘s deep-pocketed relatives, of course. Luckily, the royal family is not going to give poor Michael Middleton a heart attack. “Both the Prince of Wales [i.e., Prince Charles] and the Queen are likely to contribute towards the cost of the wedding. It will be a family contribution but no final decision has been made,” a palace spokesman told the Telegraph. “In particular, if the reception is held at Buckingham Palace, the Queen will pay for that.” For the Middleton family’s sake, here’s hoping that “are likely to contribute towards the cost” means “pay for everything.” Keep reading »

Saw This One Coming: People Copycatting Middleton’s Ring

No surprise here: USA Today reports that following Kate Middleton‘s engagement, jewelers have been “flooded” with requests for replicas of the sapphire and diamond ring that once belonged to Princess Diana. Of course, most of these orders are for cheaper knock-offs as some jewelers estimate that the piece is worth at least half a million dollars.

Kate Middleton‘s engagement ring just so happens to be a hand-me-down from the late Princess Diana. Although this family treasure is very dear to Prince William’s heart, the superstitious among us would agree that Kate should never have accepted it. Why? Well, because it’s widely believed that jewelry can be cursed. Take the Hope Diamond, for example, which many believe has been cursed since it was stolen in 1642. Since then, tragedy, injury, or even death has befallen all those who have come in contact with it, including Marie Antoinette. Even if you don’t believe that jewelry can be cursed, I always heard the old wives’ tale that engagement rings are supposed to carry the energy of the marriage from whence it came. Meaning it’s bad luck to inherit a ring from an unhappy marriage. So essentially Kate is wearing the ring of a troubled princess who had a very bad marriage, not to mention a tragic end.
