We’ve been big fans of Laura Jane Grace long before she came out as a transgender woman earlier this year, but we love the lead singer of seminal punk band Against Me! all the more now that we’ve witnessed her incredibly brave, positive attitude toward her recent transition. Needless to say, we’re a little jealous that Grace gave MTV’s House of Style hosts Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss a comprehensive tour of her Florida home, including her enviable record collection, her wife and daughter, and yes, her closet. Laura Jane is a true inspiration, and not only to the trans community: everybody can learn a little something from her openness and her adamance that above all, the most important thing is to feel comfortable in your own skin. Not to mention that the advice she gives about maintaining good skincare habits regardless of how grimy you are otherwise is invaluable. [NYMag.com]

Usually in advertising we see Photoshop used in ways that are objectionable for the statement they make about women’s body size and skin color: airbrushing is used to slim down thighs, arms and tummies or to lighten skin. But in a photo of Karlie Kloss for Numéro magazine, we see another side of airbrushing — one that gets rid of the model’s deeply protruding ribs. The original image (left) is so jarring that to see the airbrushed image (right) is a literal shock.
Earlier this week, model Karlie Kloss tweeted this hilarious side-by-side comparison of her and Will Ferrell sporting some serious floral headgear and asked, “Who wore it best? Me or Will Ferrell? You be the judge.” While both looks are quite striking, I’ve gotta vote for Will, because men in floral swimcaps are–to quote his character in “Zoolander”–“so hot right now.” What do you think? Last week, a series of photos of model Karlie Kloss went up on Vogue Italia’s website. The shots, by photographer Stephen Meisel, prominently featured the mostly-nude body of Kloss. But just as quickly as the photos went up, one shot — this shot — was taken down. And fashionistas began surmising that perhaps Kloss’s taut, toned figure seemed just a little too slim and skinny. But it’s curious that one particular photo was singled out as being too extreme, as the entire shoot has already been popping up on pro-anorexia websites as “thinspiration” fodder. Keep reading »
How young is too young for nude shots? Some are up in arms over a recent photo of 19-year-old model Karlie Kloss that appeared in Allure magazine. Allure, you say? Yes, shockingly the beauty mag has raised the ire of fashion critics for employing the still-technically-a-teenager-Kloss in a Allure’s “Best of Beauty” shoots–one of which is a soapy beauty photo where her breasts are barely covered by bubbles.
But are the photos really too racy?
For a Mario Testino – shot beauty editorial in this month’s Allure, 19-year-old Karlie Kloss wears very little makeup — along with very little of anything else. (A sample fashion credit: “necklace by Fenton, spandex thong by Victoria’s Secret.”) Though her modesty’s consistently preserved, it’s only thanks to some splayed fingers here and well-positioned bath bubbles there — and this not-really-a-scandal has some bloggers clutching their pearls and reeling from the shock of it all.
