Style Stealer: Julianne Hough Is My Leather Pants Mentor

Julianne Hough Leather Pants Style Stealer

I bought a pair of faux leather pants a couple months ago, but I haven’t worn them much because I can’t figure out exactly how to wear them. They’re not a super skinny jeggings style, so they look a bit off with baggy tops and tunics, but tight tops don’t look right either. Enter Julianne Hough for some style inspiration: I love how she cuffed up her leather pants and paired them with boyish oxfords and a simple sweater. Totally recreating this look for myself. Here’s how:  Keep reading »

Love It Or Leave It: Julianne Hough’s New Hair Extensions

Julianne Hough has had one of the best bobs in the game for a while now — her artfully layered, shoulder length style was super flattering and helped her stand out in a sea of long-haired ladies. But alas, the beautiful bob is no more. Julianne Instagrammed a picture of her new extensions last night, captioned with the hashtags “#changeisgood” and “#longhairdontcare.” Sadly, I kind of do care, as I’m not a fan of this more generic long hairstyle. Maybe she was looking for a way to distract everyone from that Halloween black face fiasco? What do you guys think of Julianne’s new look? Love it or leave it? [Popsugar]

“I wasn’t offended. I thought it was a shame that she is in this country, that she would wear blackface and not understand the historical implications of that. I don’t think Julianne is making a specific informed choice to comment on blackness. I just think it’s out of this ignorance. That’s really sad.”

I really appreciate Laverne Cox‘s take on Julianne Hough wearing blackface as part of her Crazy Eyes/”Orange Is The New Black” Halloween costume because it draws attention to the larger context in which Hough would think that part of her costume was okay. That people have not been educated on the racist history of blackface and the forms it has taken over the years is sad. And it’s a shame that people who call out blackface for being racist are often dismissed as being too sensitive. It’s good that Julianne apologized and hopefully learned something from the incident, but it’s troubling that not a single person on her team or in her entourage thought to advise her against it, perhaps because they’re also ignorant about its racist history or perhaps don’t care. And Hough is hardly alone in wearing skin color as a Halloween costume; that so many people think blackface — as a costume, on fashion magazine covers, in advertisements, at parties etc. — is okay is the real problem. [Us Weekly]

Julianne Hough Does Blackface For “Orange Is The New Black” Halloween Costume

Julianne Hough apparently did not get the memo that wearing blackface, no matter the reason — yes, even when dressing up as Crazy Eyes from “Orange is the New Black” — is racist and not okay. Melanin is not a costume! White people, you can dress up as someone of another race for Halloween without darkening your skin! Seriously, JUST SKIP THAT PART. [Photo: Pacific Coast News]

UPDATE: Julianne has issued the following apology:

I am a huge fan of the show “Orange is the New Black,” actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.

Street Style Star Of The Week: Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough’s red carpet style is notoriously hit and miss, but her everyday outfits have been catching my eye more and more often lately. Her look is pretty casual and trend-driven (see: crop tops, leather skirts, camo print leggings) and easy to replicate even if you’re working with a small budget. As someone whose wardrobe is 80% black, I also appreciate how often she wears white (and am in complete awe of how she keeps her whites so white). As much as I love neons and colorful floral prints in the summer, sometimes a black and white sundress can be just as lovely. Case in point: Julianne Hough strolling around Los Angeles in this black and white print dress, accessorized with black booties, cat eye sunglasses, and a pop of bright red nail polish. So cute, right? Get all the pieces — in plus sizes! — to steal Julianne’s style, after the jump… Keep reading »
