Trailer Park: “Funny People” And “Adam”

Well, not a ton of movies are coming out this weekend. Luckily, this one of those cases of quality winning out over quality. First, we’ve got more Apatow-constructed bromance with “Funny People,” starring Seth Rogan, Adam Sandler, and Judd Apatow’s wife. And next, “Adam,” sigh, a romantic comedy about a hot dude with Asperger’s syndrome. It’s about time mental illness got some love.

Quote Of The Day: Judd Apatow & Seth Rogen Hate Katherine Heigl Too

Quote Of The Day: Judd Apatow & Seth Rogen Hate Katherine Heigl Too

Seth Rogen: “[‘The Ugly Truth’] looks like it really puts women on a pedestal in a beautiful way.”
Judd Apatow: “I hear there’s a scene where she’s wearing… underwear… with a vibrator in it, so I’d have to see if that was uplifting for women.”
Rogen: “I gotta say, it’s not like we’re the only people she said some bats**t crazy things about. That’s kind of her bag now.”

—The star and director of “Funny People” on Katherine Heigl‘s hypocrisy in an interview with Howard Stern. Heigl famously told Vanity Fair that she thought “Knocked Up” (the Apatow film that she starred in alongside Rogen) “painted women as shrews.”

Judd Apatow Writes Good Female Roles—For Leslie Mann

Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow

We’re sick and tired of the “Is Judd Apatow A Sexist Pig Because His Main Characters Are Loser Guys Who Date Women Who Are Too Good For Them?” debate.

No, he’s not. True, Katherine Heigl said “Knocked Up” was “a little sexist.” But that woman complains about everything.

Nevertheless, whether or not Apatow’s a sexist pig has taken on a life of its own and become something he has to answer for. Earlier this week at a screening of his latest film, “Funny People,” Apatow told an audience:

“I think, really, what a lot of these issues are is that women are romanticized in movies. [My] movies go pretty hard at having women have as many problems as men. They make mistakes that are as big as men’s. So when someone says ‘Knocked Up’ seems sexist, I’m like, ‘Really?’ I mean, Seth [Rogen] has an earthquake, and he grabs his bong before his pregnant girlfriend. That’s pretty bad. But I try to weigh it evenly so it’s not really about men or women; it’s just about miscommunications and us at our worst.”

The Five Funniest Oscar Moments

The movie business holds the Academy Awards in such high regard it can make or break a distribution deal.  Luckily, actors don’t (always) take themselves so seriously. Aside from the over-the-top gushing that came when past winners introduced the nominees for the acting awards, there were plenty of LOL moments from last night’s Oscars (not including the moment when the camera caught Angelina Jolie laughing at Jennifer Aniston[‘s joke], above). From Styx lyrics in speeches to Steve Martin’s ego mania, here are our five favorite funnies…

Who IS James Franco, Anyway?

James Franco Biography

He’s sexy enough to play James Dean, funny enough to host “Saturday Night Live,” bad enough to play a classic comic book villain, sophisticated enough to be the face of Gucci pour Homme, and brave enough to go gay—twice. James Franco is more than just a pretty face, he’s the kind of actor that at 30 has already earned the respect and admiration of his peers. Ask anyone, from Tinseltown to his hometown: To know James Franco is to love him. In his latest movie, “Milk,” the story of gay activist and San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk, he stars alongside Emile Hirsch and Sean Penn. The flick opened over Thanksgiving weekend, and it already has major Oscar buzz. In it, Franco plays, as he says, “the supporting wife” role, Milk’s lover, Scott Smith. It’s a bold move, but James Franco isn’t your average actor. Here’s what we found out about the man behind all those legends.

Monday Menage: The Men Of Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express, the latest comedy from writer/producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin), opened over the weekend.  While the reviews considered it a heist caper, to us, it was a bromantic comedy featuring James Franco, Seth Rogan, and Danny McBride. Foxy Franco was briefly, but satisfyingly, shirtless, and readily able to express his bro-on-bro love to his buddies. Seth Rogan, on the other hand, never stops being adorable. He spends the film in a suit and then saves the day wearing nothing but tighty-whities and striped knee socks to the knee. Fresh meat Danny McBride is the new funny man making the rounds in Hollywood. You can catch more of him in action next in Tropic Thunder, which opens this weekend. But forget the fight sequences and car chases in this flick, as these three gentlemen espoused fart jokes, we swooned.

James Franco: Funny Bone

We just can’t get enough of James Franco! And surprisingly enough, we want the recent Daily Hotness stud for more than just his body—we actually love the James Dean look-a-like for his mind too. Sure his smarts and self-depreciating humor are like icing on a cake (umm, a delicious, super talented cake filled with good looks and and big screen street cred), but we’ve been loving the short films that Franco made with his brother on Funny or Die. In the above web-isode, produced by Pinapple ExpressJudd Apatow, James teaches his brother Dave to cry on camera by drawing on a memory of his first pet, a cat who was put to sleep. And check out just how great his genes are in this response tape by his equally adorable and hilarious mom.

Knocked Up: The Most Controversial and Thought-Provoking Stupid-Funny Movie Ever

Wow. The last movie that made us this upset and confused was, like, Fahrenheit 9/11, so imagine our surprise when we found ourselves wanting to stab Ben (Seth Rogen) in the face as we shouted “Abort! Abort!” at Alison (Katherine Heigl), like she could hear us or something. Sadly, Judd Apatow, the man behind the ever more hilarious but not nearly as emotion-inspiring 40-Year-Old Virgin, probably didn’t intend for his summer blockbuster to get women involved in a heated debate about unplanned pregnancies, but, well, it did. Our highly expertised movie criticism after the jump.
