Rush Limbaugh is getting the Hollywood treatment, courtesy of John Cusack. The (liberal) actor’s production company plans to start work next year on a movie about Limbaugh, with Cusack playing the leading role himself, reports AP. Except for the fact that Betty Thomas is directing, no other details are known. Limbaugh, though, will be sure to love this AP comparison: “Cusack is a slender, dark-haired 46-year-old, while Limbaugh is 61, balding and portly.” Read more…
Over the weekend, I went to a brunch screening of the John Cusack classic “Better Off Dead.” I’ve seen it about a zillion times before — isn’t it the best? — but I’d forgotten about the New Year’s Eve dance scene. In it, Cusack and pals go to a school dance where E.G. Daily sings the titular song. E.G. Daily, you might recall, is also in the movie “Valley Girl,” and is just the best. I watched the ’80s classic “Better Off Dead” this weekend, and wow, hindsight really is 20/20. First off, it’s pretty clear that John Cusack’s character Lane Meyer is kind of an obsessive psycho when it comes to his girlfriend Beth. Um, hangers with her picture on them? Cuh-raaaaaazy. Second, Beth is pretty much a wet blanket, and it’s so obvious that Lane’s neighbor, exotically cool French foreign exchange student Monique, is a way better match. For one, she’s French. But also, she likes sports, and can fix a car, and can spot Lane’s major problem (that he gives up before even trying) from a mile away. Plus, her fashion is so, so good.
For most of the movie, she wears an oversized winter coat with a porkpie hat and a lot of boyish layers. Somehow it totally works, but we realize her look may not be for everyone, so we’ve updated the baggy boyish thing with some contemporary touches. Click through to see our interpretation. I, like everyone else who has read “The Telltale Heart” and “The Masque of the Red Death,” am obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe. And yet, I’ve been a little apprehensive about the fact that Relativity Media is making a movie called “The Raven,” about the classic American author. I had assumed it would be a traditional biopic, but now that I see the trailer, it clearly isn’t. Nope, it’s a thriller that imagines what would have happened if a serial killer in the 1800s had been so inspired by Poe’s stories that he started recreating them. Poe—played by adorable John Cusack—is recruited by a police detective to help him solve the crimes. I don’t know if I love the concept, but I’m at least sold on plunking down $12 to see it. You? The final moments of “Say Anything” are perfect. When the seatbelt sign flashes off with a ding—well, let’s just say that it got me when I was a teenager, and it still gets me now. Which is why I have to object to director Cameron Crowe’s revelation that he’s thinking of doing a sequel to the classic film. “It’s the only thing that I’ve written that I would consider doing that with,” Crowe said on the Television Critics Association press tour. “I’ve thought about it from time to time and talked about it with John Cusack once and just said this is the only story that I kind of think there might be another chapter to at some point.”
