The Soapbox: Why Macklemore’s Costume Matters

SB-macklemore

Last Friday, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed a surprise music concert at the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle. Awesome, right? Only, because it was a surprise, Macklemore wanted to go a bit incognito and donned a costume. But the costume was anything but awesome. To me, and many others, the costume looked like a negative stereotype of a Jewish man.

For his part, Macklemore denies that he purposefully intended to mock Jewish people with his costume. Late yesterday, he took to Tumblr to issue an apology.

“My intention was to dress up and surprise the people at the show with a random costume and nothing more. Thus, it was surprising and disappointing that the images of a disguise were sensationalized leading to the immediate assertion that my costume was anti-Semetic. I acknowledge how the costume could, within a context of stereotyping, be ascribed to a Jewish caricature. I am here to say that it was absolutely not my intention, and unfortunately at the time I did not foresee the costume to be viewed in such regard. [...] I truly apologize to anybody that I may have offended.”

Macklemore Performs In Seattle In Costume Some Characterized As A Jewish Stereotype

A surprise performance by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis would get me excited, sure. And that’s probably what a lot of audience members were feeling at the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle (where Macklemore’s coat from the “Thrift Shop” video hangs in the collection).

But folks all over — including Seth Rogen — are scratching their heads now that pictures have emerged of Macklemore (real name: Ben Haggerty) performing in a costume that looks like an ugly Jewish stereotype. Keep reading »

Dating is hard enough. But what about dating when you’ve recently left an insular religious community that pretty much forbade interaction with the opposite sex?

Such is the problem faced by ex-Orthodox Jews who are “Off the Derech” (derech is Hebrew for path), or OTD, and assimilating into secular society. Hasidic communities separate boys and girls while young; girls often marry around 18 or 19, while boys tie the knot in their early 20s, having children shortly after. Touching members of the opposite sex to whom you are not related is forbidden and interaction is generally discouraged.  Is it any wonder ex-Orthodox Jews are utterly bamboozled when it comes to l’amour?

That’s where dating coach Israel Irenstein comes in. Keep reading »

That’s what the Anti-Defamation League of Philadelphia seems to think. The organization has taken the hipster clothing chain to task for a T-shirt featuring a Star of David design they say is strikingly similar to one that was used to identify Jews by the Nazis during the Holocaust and was embroidered on concentration camp uniforms.

“We find this use of symbolism to be extremely distasteful and offensive, and we are outraged that your company would make this product available to your customers,” said Barry Morrison, the regional director of the ADL in a letter to Urban’s chairman and cheif executive Richard Hayne.

The Kellog shirt is by Dutch label Wood Wood, and retails for $100. So far, Urban has yet to respond to the ADL’s claims and the shirt is still available on their site. [ONTD]

Today’s Lady News: Orthodox Jewish Newspaper Explains Airbrushing Women From Situation Room Pic

  • The conservative Hasidic Jewish newspaper in Brooklyn that removed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and counterterrorism analyst Audrey Tomason — the only two women in the iconic Situation Room photo of the President watching the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound — has released a statement. Der Zeitung writes:

“Our editorial policies are guided by a Rabbinical Board and because of laws of modesty, does not allow for the publishing of photos of women. The readership of the Tzeitung believe that women should be appreciated for who they are and what they do, not for what they look like, and the Jewish laws of modesty are an expression of respect for women, not the opposite.”

You can read the rest of the statement — which apologizes more for altering the White House’s official photograph, which is against policy, than it does for Photoshopping all the women out of the photograph — on the newspaper’s web site. [Der Zeitung]
