Wendy Brandes’ Jewelry Reminds Us Of “Game Of Thrones”

We’re obsessed with “Game Of Thrones.” Obsessed! I just finished watching all of seasons one and two in, like, two weeks. And Amelia’s now reading the books. I want to wear their weird medieval gowns, and have handmaidens to do my hair, and oh! The jewelry? So that’s why we’re particularly smitten with jewelry designer Wendy Brandes’ collection of fine jewelry, that’s very reminiscent of Cersei, Sansa, Dany and the lot. Prices for the collection start at around $1,800, and are made with real gold and precious stones, so start saving now. Brandes also has a lower-priced line called Wendy B. that’s pretty cute, too!

In yet another example of a big fashion chain “borrowing” ideas from an independent designer, Topshop recently rolled out a set of “punctuation rings” that look a hell of a lot like the awesome swear ring set by jewelry designer and fashion blogger Wendy Brandes. Wendy posted a response on her blog yesterday that addressed the cyclical nature of fashion and Topshop’s choice to manufacture a product so similar to her own. Check out her thoughtful reaction after the jump … Keep reading »

Urban Outfitters Steals Another Indie Artist’s Work … Again

Jewelry artist Stevie Koerner sells her “A World of Love” pendants on Etsy (left). They’re adorable little charms in the shapes of states with hearts cut out of them. Urban Outfitters liked the pendants so much that they decided to copy the charms, almost exactly (right), and call them “I Heart Destination Necklaces.” And they did all of this without approaching Koerner about her designs.

It’d be great if big stores like Urban worked with small designers to help get their wares out to a bigger audience — and often they do. I have several friends who create private label goods for the hip clothing company (private label is when an indie designer sells designs under another label’s name). But just as often, Urban — and other mega stores — have been caught straight up ripping off independent designers. Last summer, the company was called out for ripping off Brooklyn designer Lilian Crowe, who made necklaces featuring rib cages, spines and skulls (they’re neat-looking, really!). Keep reading »

Cat Hair You Can Wear

As the owner of two very large, fluffy cat beasts, I often walk around covered in about a pound and a half of luscious grey and orange cat fur. You’re jealous, I know. Jewelry designer Heidi Abrahamson takes things to the next level, though, and will create custom jewelry from your cat’s fur. Crazy cat lady or innovative designer? You decide. [Modern Cat] Keep reading »
