It turns out that watching “Jersey Shore” is not the most brilliant way to waste one’s time — attending a conference on “Jersey Shore” Studies is. On Friday, UChicago hosted a conference on Jersey Shore Studies, where roughly 25 academics from the U.S. and Canada name-dropped Snooki and The Situation alongside Foucault and Marx. One paper examined the performance of being a “guido” or “guidette” as being similar to the performance of drag; another examined whether the show is an embarrassment to Italian-American culture. These crazy academics even coined a new term to explain all things DTL: “guidosexuality.” Way to take something fun and ruin it with overanalysis, smartypants!
