As pleased as I am to see Jennifer Hudson taking some new fashion risks (for awhile there it seemed like her entire wardrobe consisted of bandage dresses and workout pants), she missed the mark with this outfit. Between the long graphic tank, the longer jersey skirt, studded loafers, layered necklaces, cardigan, and fedora, there’s just waaaayyy too much going on. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

At tonight’s Grammy Awards, Jennifer Hudson was tasked with singing “I Will Always Love You” in tribute to Whitney Houston, who passed away yesterday at the age of 48. It was emotional and flawless, the perfect, if brief, memoriam. Watch it above.

It’s hard to imagine “Precious” without then-unknown Gabourey Sidibe. But Jennifer Hudson was riding high after “Dreamgirls” and said she turned down the role because she didn’t want to gain weight. “I had [gained weight] with Effie and as much as I was moved by this film, I wanted to try a role that had nothing whatsoever to do with my weight,” Jennifer explained, ever the Weight Watchers spokeswoman. I’m intrigued by the idea of someone else playing such a now-iconic character. This got me thinking … are there other stars who just missed being cast in big roles? The answer is a resounding YES. Keep clicking for 23 more intriguing examples.

Jennifer Hudson Duets With Her Larger Self In Weight Watchers Ad

Watch Video

Jennifer Hudson duets on “I Believe In You & Me” with her larger self — the self that competed on “American Idol,” the self that starred in “Dreamgirls” — in a Weight Watchers commercial that I have to admit is kinda touching. (And that’s not usually something I would say about a Weight Watchers commercial.) The “new” Jennifer is much more polished; yes, she is slimmer but her movements less theatrical, her outfit is more chic and her hair is straightened. In short, she’s conforming to a more mainstream version of beauty — some might even say a white standard of beauty. I’m happy if she’s happy (and, perhaps, healthier, although we know people are created in all shapes and sizes and can be healthier at a larger body weight). I just thought the “old” Jennifer — who made it in Hollywood on her considerable talent despite being larger than the average starlet — was cute, too. [Essence] Keep reading »

Jennifer Hudson Is Prouder Of Her Weight Loss Than Her Oscar

“I can’t care about whether I’m too big for some or too small for others. It goes back to how you feel about yourself. I like me the way I am. For anyone who wants to lose: Dude, if I can do it, you can do it. And for those who want to stay the same, I hope I can be an example to you, too; I was proud of being a big girl … It’s like my mother said: ‘Well, honey, when there is a will, there is a way.’ You have to want it. I’m prouder of my weight loss than my Oscar! I hope it has inspired people.”

Jennifer Hudson talks to SELF magazine about her dramatic weight loss over the past two years, and about how many fans have criticized her for getting too skinny. While I like her response to that, I can’t believe she said she’s prouder of her weight loss than her Oscar. Lots of people will lose a dramatic amount of weight over the course of their life. Very few will win a little golden guy. [Celebitchy] Keep reading »

Jennifer Hudson Loved Her Old Body, Too

“I never thought I was overweight. I thought my old look was pretty normal. That was how all the girls looked growing up in Chicago. I didn’t have any problem with it. It makes me smile to think back to myself when I did ‘Dreamgirls’ with Beyonce. I did see all these women in Hollywood, all very slim and I thought, ‘Wow, these ladies are very into themselves.’ I loved that I stood out in a room. You knew when you saw this woman it was Jennifer Hudson.”

Jennifer Hudson on her body image before her dramatic weight loss. I love that she said this. I think that’s a sign of true self-esteem if you can approve of yourself at every size and shape. She does look fantastic, but I’m wondering if she’s implying that she’s really into herself now that she’s one of those slim Hollywood ladies or if she no longer feels like she stands out in a room.
