At tonight’s Grammy Awards, Jennifer Hudson was tasked with singing “I Will Always Love You” in tribute to Whitney Houston, who passed away yesterday at the age of 48. It was emotional and flawless, the perfect, if brief, memoriam. Watch it above.

It’s hard to imagine “Precious” without then-unknown Gabourey Sidibe. But Jennifer Hudson was riding high after “Dreamgirls” and said she turned down the role because she didn’t want to gain weight. “I had [gained weight] with Effie and as much as I was moved by this film, I wanted to try a role that had nothing whatsoever to do with my weight,” Jennifer explained, ever the Weight Watchers spokeswoman. Jennifer Hudson duets on “I Believe In You & Me” with her larger self — the self that competed on “American Idol,” the self that starred in “Dreamgirls” — in a Weight Watchers commercial that I have to admit is kinda touching. (And that’s not usually something I would say about a Weight Watchers commercial.) The “new” Jennifer is much more polished; yes, she is slimmer but her movements less theatrical, her outfit is more chic and her hair is straightened. In short, she’s conforming to a more mainstream version of beauty — some might even say a white standard of beauty. I’m happy if she’s happy (and, perhaps, healthier, although we know people are created in all shapes and sizes and can be healthier at a larger body weight). “OK!” Magazine Co-Opts Bullying For Stars “Bullied For Their Weight”

The effects of bullying are in the news everywhere lately, from the teen girl, Megan Meier, who killed herself after being harassed on MySpace, to Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi and the spate of copycat suicides that followed him. As crushing as the reports of each new suicide can be, I’m also grateful that the mainstream media is finally paying attention to the issues that lay underneath bullying — like an article about Clementi that made last week’s cover of People magazine. Any conversation about bullying is an opportunity to make people think about their own use of intimidation and the abuse of power.

But I take issue with OK! magazine’s recent cover depicting Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Hudson under the tag line “Bullied For Their Weight: They’ll Never Call Me Fat Again!” Um, skinny, beautiful, rich women are the two victims you could come up with for a bullying story? And they stuck it to their bullies by going on a juice diet? Yeah, that’s the message we want to send: capitulate to the bullies and you won’t be given crap anymore!
