Dad Jeans Are Making A Comeback, You Didn’t Know They’d Ever Disappeared

dad jeans trend piece

Most of us who have dads are probably familiar with the concept of dad jeans, those super cool, light-washed, high-waisted jeans dads love to buy at JC Penney’s. My dad loves some Dad Jeans — his favorite varietal is a gently faded black jean that goes great with his plaid shirt of choice and an anonymous black shoe. And then there’s Dad Jeans in popular culture: Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Taylor from “Home Improvement” (worn with smug smile), or Louis C.K., an actual dad who is also a nerdy, funny, middle-aged man.

Suddenly, Dad Jeans Are A Thing, a thing worth writing about in the New York Times Style section. The renewed interest in Dad Jeans is probably attributable to one thing — the ever-snarling Ouroboros that is fashion. It’s so uncool, say Dad Jeans advocates, that it is suddenly Coolness Ground Zero and how could you ever not want to wear Dad Jeans, you cool-as-fuck hipster? Keep reading »

Who Wore It Best: Celebs Rock Denim!

Celeb Style: Best denim looks

Celebs: They’re just like us! I mean, they own jeans, too. And sometimes, occasionally, they wear them in public and stuff. Over the past couple of days, Jennifer Garner, Hayden Panettiere, Sienna Miller, Jessica Biel and Alessandra Ambrosio have all been spotted out in their fave denim looks. While Hayden and Jessica stuck to a skinny style, Sienna wore a more (questionable) relaxed cut, and Alessandra tempted fate in white. Denim is basically the foundational fabric of the Great American Outfit, but even so, sometimes celebs can miss the mark. So who’s your fave?

Dear Topshop, I’m not sure why anyone would willingly purchase a pair of mom jeans, but I think everyone knows that an authentic pair can be procured at any Kohl’s or Kmart for much, much less than the $65 price you’ve slapped on these acid-washed, tapered, high-waisted monstrosities. Seriously. Make it stop. [Bleach Acid Mom Jeans, $65, Topshop]

“I’m a woman with love handles. I’m 5’11″ and a size 10 but even when I was a size 6, my (definitely smaller) love handles were still be a problem. Could you recommend good jeans for someone with this issue? I have two styles of jeans from The Gap and it has to be a really super fabulous body image day for me to wear them out of the house. Basically I’m left with my H&M skinny jeans with normal rise. They’re a size bigger than I normally wear but, unlike The Gap, they still cling well to my thighs despite being a little looser in the waist where I need the help. Going up to a 12 at The Gap is too big, too baggy and completely unflattering.

Any help would be amazing! I’m willing to pay $100 or even a bit more for something that is flattering and fits well.” — Jil

Polka dot jeans have been popping up on all my favorite fashion blogs and stylish ladies I see on the street, and it’s causing me to have some pretty major polka dot jeans envy. I have a big move coming up, so I’m trying not to buy too many new clothes. What’s a trend-obsessed girl to do? Add polka dots to a pair of jeans I already own, obviously! I’m going to try this super easy DIY on a pair of denim cutoffs this weekend and think spring-y thoughts. Care to join me? [A Merry Mishap]

Wrangler’s New Moisturizing Jeans Want To Make Your Butt Soft And Smooth

I love trying out new fashion trends but, let’s be honest. I have no idea what to think of this one. Wrangler is launching a new pair of jeans that “moisturize” your butt. The Denim Spa jeans come in three different moisturizing levels- Aloe Vera, Olive Extract, and Smooth Legs, and they claim to help prevent cellulite. The moisturizers supposedly contain “the hydrating properties of natural oils and butters” with such exotic ingredients as monoi de Tahiti? Never heard of that one until now…

This raises so many questions in my mind, and I feel have no answer for them right now. My first question is, how exactly does this “contraption” work? Does the cloth like continuously spray the aloe vera? Also, wouldn’t it feel kinda weird/ be difficult to get your jeans on over your underwear? Read more…

Jeans are the keystone around which the rest of my wardrobe revolves. Sure, they’re not exactly trendy or adventurous, but they are definitely cool, comfortable, and the easiest thing to throw on in any given morning. The perfect pair can make you look like a supercharged version of yourself — taller, thinner, more stylish, even smarter! We may have left our printed jeans back in summer storage, but that doesn’t mean we’ve resigned ourselves to the faded old stalwarts: coated, or waxed, denim not only provides a sleek substitute to the black and blue variety, but the thicker, more substantial fabric makes it perfect for the cooler seasons upon us. We took the guesswork out of what to wear with your new favorite pair of jeans by putting together three different looks, after the jump … Keep reading »

Freezing Jeans
Apparently, you can freeze your jeans instead of washing them. Read More »

“They have these jeans you don’t have to wash now — or so they say. It’s true! … I went to this store APC which has really nice stuff. And you buy these things and the person said to me, ‘Don’t wash them for a long time.’ They mean like six months, I think … [I've washed my jeans] maybe twice in six months …The times I’ve done it, I’ve worn them and walked into my shower with them and put some soap on them and then air dried them … Isn’t that how you are supposed to do it?”

– Anderson Cooper explained his jean washing habits to Stacy London of “What Not to Wear” on his show. I’m glad he’s talking about this because I never wash my jeans either. And it’s usually something I’m ashamed to admit. My reasons for this: I don’t want the dark wash to fade, I like the worn in, stretched out comfiness of my jeans, and also, I’m lazy. I never thought of just wearing my jeans into the shower and soaping them down. That’s a great idea. Maybe I’ll try that. [Celebitchy]

I’m not 100 percent sure what’s going on with Brandy’s jeans. They’re either a puffy crotch style that hasn’t exactly gone mainstream yet, or they’re equipped with a secret marsupial pouch that she’s using to store her wallet and a few granola bars. If it’s the latter, I must applaud her efficiency, but when you pair crazy pants with a crazy leopard print top and crazy-high Louboutin boots, the whole look is just a bit, well, crazy.
