My Jean-Paul Gaultier gold bar isn’t like the rest of my gold bars. It’s emblazoned with designer Jean-Paul Gaultier’s name and logo, for chrissakes. That means it cost a premium — like 10 percent more than the common gold bar, just because it has Gaultier’s name on it. So of course I can’t put it with the other gold bars. But also! I can’t just leave it out on the coffee table. Someone might mistake it for a very, very heavy coaster and accidentally put their glass of 1978 Montrachet on it. Embarrassing gaffe! The mantle? Then I’m afraid nobody will notice it and realize that I spent $1,826.33 on it (plus a $25 handling fee, duh). Won’t somebody come up with a Jean-Paul Gaultier Gold Bar Display Case? As though Jean-Paul Gaultier’s couture presentation weren’t awesome enough with its copious turbans and leather, Dita Von Teese capped off the show in a patent leather, jewel-encrusted, and, best of all, mechanical corset. Only vaguely skeletal from the front, the thing looked positively macabre (in a cool way) from the back. Levi’s + Gaultier = Denim Cone Boobs

With the news that Jean Paul Gaultier is leaving his post at Hermès, it’s safe to assume that the designer will have more time to focus on creative collaborations such as this one with Levi’s. The all-American jean company reached out to the eccentric JPG to create a collection of denim pieces complete with his trademark aesthetics, including cone boobs, to bring a designer feel to denim. JPG provided a selection of fashion-forward clothing items to the denim brand, ranging from harem pants to jean jackets. Out of all the options, I’m in love with the dungaree dress. It’s perfect for summer with cutouts perfect for warm weather, and you can layer in a tee to transform it into a day dress, or wear it on top of a bikini for a trip to the beach. The cost leaves much to be desired though, as pieces range from about $173 to $478, but they are Jean Paul Gaultier creations, after all. Jean Paul Gaultier’s Line For Target Debuted, Sold Out

Jean Paul Gaultier‘s collection for Target arrived today yesterday, but if you didn’t stay up all night, endlessly refreshing Target.com, or make an early morning trip to the store, you probably missed out. That’s because most of the JPG for Target clothes were gone before 9 a.m. on Monday morning.

I thought the point of high-end designers collaborating with mass retailers was to get their name out beyond the world of fashion insiders and to give those of us who can’t afford a real designer clothes a taste of our favorite labels. But design-for-all doesn’t seem to be the goal anymore. When the only people who can get their hands on the clothes are fashion insiders and crazy entrepreneurs who snap up as much as they can and sell the items for more than twice the retail prize, the original purpose is defeated. And I’m not alone in feeling annoyed with the exclusivity of these “democratic” offerings. Keep reading »

We’ve talked about the “Alice In Wonderland” impact on the runway, but it looks like this year’s Oscar darling has the Disney classic beat. “Avatar,” the James Cameron flick about big blue aliens and their planet (OK, so I fell asleep during the movie), raked in over $2 billion so it was only a matter of time before the fashion industry hopped on a train to planet Pandora. Jean Paul Gaultier took an Eden-like approach to his January show, and Vogue‘s March issue will feature a 10-page spread of forest-inhabiting, tattoo-smothered models. New York designer Jen Kao has already proclaimed that her next collection will be an homage to the sci-fi film. The photo above shows some “Avatar”-esque looks from Valentino and Gautlier. It’s official. Jean Paul Gaultier has signed on as the newest Target Designer Collaborator, inciting gasps and breathless moments from fashion lovers all over. He’s the third designer to take part, following Alexander McQueen who drew inspiration from Liela Moss of The Duke Spirit, and Anna Sui, whose “Gossip Girl” pieces were a major fan obsession. While flipping through the September/October issue of Manhattan magazine, we noticed a fashion spread with a model wearing what looks like the nonsensical Siwy see-through jeans. Upon closer inspection, however, we discovered they are, in fact, Jean Paul Gaultier fishnet panel tights, and they retail at Bergdorf Goodman for a mere $135.
