J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons On Why It’s OK To Miss Out On Designer Collabs

We’ve been a little bummed that we’re not obsessive enough to stay up all night in order to score pieces from Target’s recent designer collaborations, but J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons puts things in perspective. In an interview with Style.com, Jenna shared how she feels about designers doing “affordable” lines for mass retailers:

“What I appreciate about it is someone like Rodarte or Proenza Schouler maybe gets more mindshare from people who might not have known who they are. But I think it’s a little flash-in-the-pan, and the quality, a lot of times, is really not great. That, to me, is for the young little fashion girl who’s obsessed with Proenza and Rodarte and who can’t afford it. For someone who just wants to look good on a day-to-day basis, it’s not a strategy for how to dress.”

She makes a good point. Instead of racing to pick up pieces when Target, H&M, and other retailers join forces with high-end designers, we should focus on building a wardrobe without regard for whose name is on the tag. From now on, when the dress we’d been hoping to score sells out before we can snag one, we’ll just tell ourselves we aren’t looking for “flash in the pan” clothes. We want to develop our own style by purchasing quality items we love, rather than trying to pick up something that’s hot today but might not make it through one laundry cycle. J. Crew Jacks Up Their Offerings For Men

J.Crew wants the men in our lives to know that when it comes to concerns of the sartorial nature, they are not alone. They’re launching Jack Knows Best, a style service for men where guys are encouraged to seek personal style advice by asking Jack (their in-house men’s stylist) for wardrobe guidance on pressing questions such as “What should I wear to a wedding?” and “Can I wear white jeans after Labor Day?” (See our answer here.) J.Crew Introduces “Jack” Style Consultant For Guys

When it comes to objective advice, sometimes friends can’t be trusted. This is especially true when the pals are dudes, and the topic is fashion. Now, style-challenged men can find direction with “Jack Knows Best,” J. Crew‘s new style consulting service. Guys can now ask Jack — a trusty wingman type — shopping questions such as “Where can I wear a linen suit?” (A: Anywhere warm, but don’t iron it.) or “What should I wear to a wedding?” (A: Follow the groom’s lead.)

The list of questions is quite informative, and admittedly, we didn’t know the answers to many of them. Not that we don’t know jack about men’s fashion, but when it comes to tuxes and ties, we ladies could stand to learn a thing or two as well. [J. Crew] Keep reading »

Essie Wants You To Put A Judith Ripka Ring On It

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but if said girl can’t afford the real thing, there’s always, erm, Essie nail polish. Essie has linked up with luxe jeweler Judith Ripka to create a trio of polishes infused with diamond dust. The polishes range from subtle pink (Put A Ripka Ring On It) to fiery red (Queen of Hearts). Although they cost $15 a pop, these are sure to be a hit–like Essie’s other summer hookup with J.Crew. For a small cosmetics line, Essie sure does get around! J.Crew Gets Into The Beauty Biz By Selling Essie Nail Polish

We just got an email from J.Crew alerting us to the fact that “New Fall Arrivals Are In” and immediately stopped working to drool over the retailer’s genius ribbon-front top, wool schoolboy blazer, and …nail polish? Yes, J.Crew appears to be selling nail polish from our favorite maker, Essie! (We always knew the people at J.Crew were totally on the same page as us.) The two special colors are called One of A Kind, a bright orangey red (which just happens to be this writer’s favorite shade for her short nails), and Eternal Optimist, a subdued baby pink.

Trying a new polish color can be a gamble, because what it looks like in the bottle isn’t necessary how it appears on your hands. But since we adore just about everything J.Crew produces, we’re guessing these shades, with their J.Crew stamp of approval, are pretty fab. [J.Crew] Keep reading »

Malia And Sasha Obama Know What They Like, Fashion-Wise

Michelle Obama is getting a lot of attention for her keen fashion sense, but it seems that she passed along her style gene to daughters Malia and Sasha. In November, the first lady’s team approached J.Crew about submitting sketches for inaugural events, and the label submitted 20 sketches based on details they received about the first family. “Malia, she likes pleats and pared-down things and is not a huge fan of sparkles, but little Sasha loves bright colors and sparkly things,” said Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s creative director. It seems that at age 10, Malia’s fashion tastes tend to be on the sophisticated end of the scale, while Sasha, 7, prefers to dress more playfully. So far, Malia and Sasha have worn two outfits each designed for them by J.Crew, and Michelle Obama has worn one; There were 15 outfits, comprised of about six pieces each, created for the Obama women. Come fall, similar clothes will be introduced into the crewcuts by J.Crew line, but they won’t be exactly the same. “They’ll be versions of them but not the exact coat, in that color, with those buttons,” Lyons said. “Malia and Sasha will not go to school next year and see the girl next to them wearing the same coat.” Heaven forbid anyone else have the same coats as the first daughters!
