Let’s Put An End To The Designer Dolls

Designers Christophe Decarnin of Balmain, Proenza Schouler, Christopher Kane, Rick Ownes, and Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, along with 295 others, have dressed Jason Wu dolls for a charity auction to benefit AIDS and breast cancer charities. The auction will take place at Jeffrey’s during New York Fashion Week. It’s true that these dolls were “created” by some of fashion’s heavy-hitters and are for charity, but I don’t see why they’re expected to fetch upwards of $250. The doll clothing and props aren’t remarkable. In fact, the dolls look like rejects from the Barbie collections actually created by Byron Lars. Designer dolls are no longer a novelty, so it’s time for this fundraising ploy to be retired. Returning to his couture doll clothing roots, fashion darling Jason Wu has designed a doll and clothed it in one of his Fall ’09 runway looks. Reminiscent of Barbie way back before she became so fond of hot pink and boobs, this bleached blond little number is a classy alternative to those slutty Bratz dolls. Wallpaper Only One Wall, Maybe Keep Your Rental Deposit

I’m not a huge fan of most accent walls—you know, the decorating technique where you paint one wall with a color and leave the other three some version of white. It always seems to scream, “This is the wall where I got crazy and really went for it!” Why not buck up and paint all four? If you hate it, it’s paint; you repaint it white.

But when I saw Jason Wu’s bedroom wall wallpapered in a gray floral paper, I had to eat my words. I loved it! Here’s why it works for me: The wallpaper acts like a stand-in for a wall of art.     Fashion World Officially Commends Michelle Obama

    Michelle Obama hasn’t even been First Lady for a full two months, and she’s already getting recognized for making an impact on American fashion. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced that Obama will be presented with the Board of Directors’ Special Tribute when the year’s fashion awards are given in June. Along with this acknowledgement, the nominees for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear, given to an emerging American designer two Obama favorites: Thakoon Panichgul and Jason Wu. So, if a young designer wants commendation (and a sweet cash prize to help their business), clearly they should keep the First Lady in mind.
