The key to selecting a successful pop culture-inspired Halloween costume is choosing someone who has an iconic or distinctive look — be it their hair, makeup, accessories or clothing. Nail that specific element of the costume that makes the inspiration immediately recognizable and you’re golden. With her signature pompadour, skinny suits, black-and-white details and bow-ties, singer Janelle Monae is one such example. (And let me use this as an opportunity to emphasize that if you’re a white or otherwise lighter-skinned human, you do not need nor should you use blackface as part of your Janelle Monae costume. It’s not necessary [proof!] and it’s wrong.) Best of all, you can probably either find many of the elements for this costume in your own closet — and if not, you can reuse whatever you buy in every day life! Score! Get the details on the costume elements above and find out how to do Janelle’s pompadour for yourself here. Keep reading »

We here at The Frisky are big Janelle Monae fans. She’s got a style and sound that’s indisputably all her own. Her latest video, “Tightrope,” is no exception. It’s Beyonce meets Lady Gaga meets Rihanna meets Little Richard meets Lil’ Kim — or something like that. Clocking in at a solid five minutes, the video takes place at the “Palace of the Dogs” insane asylum, where dancing is prohibited on account of its magical qualities. We recommend joining Janelle by standing up in your cubicle and shaking a leg or two. TGIF! [YouTube] Keep reading »
We couldn’t possibly be any more obsessed with Grammy-winning artist and new fashion It Girl, Janelle Monae. Seriously, this gorgeous chick not only literally rocks, she’s got a mean sense of style and can moonwalk like a champ. What’s not to love? We’re waiting with bated breath to meet her at the MAC store on Fashion’s Night Out, but in the meantime, we’re spying on her unusual beauty regimen. While we can agree that some of her favorite products, like MAC’s Studio Finish concealer and #35 lashes are indeed superb, we were surprised to learn that when it comes to her “off” days, she has a rather unique source for blush and lipstick: “… when I am with family or running errands, I use Whole Foods’ organic raspberries for blush and dark cherries for stained, moist lips. There’s nothing like having genuine natural colors on your face,” she told our friends over at the Beauty Counter.
