It seems the love affair between teen wunderkind style blogger Tavi Gevinson and Sassy magazine creator Jane Pratt may be coming to a close. Tavi originally signed on to be a part of Pratt’s new website xoJane, and was meant to bring the teen voice and angle to the publication. But when Pratt’s site launched earlier this year, the Style Rookie blogger’s influence was nowhere to be found. Now it seems that Gevinson has decided that xoJane’s parent corporation, Say Media, isn’t anyone she wants to work with. Instead, Gevinson is going independent for her new magazine venture, Rookie. “It was just that I want to have full control, and it’s important to me that we’re independent, not so that we can be indie and ‘down with the Man,’ but because I find a lot of comfort knowing that it’s all in my control,” said Gevinson in a statement. Given Gevinson’s love of all things ’90s (Riot Grrl, Courtney Love, “My So-Called Life”), we’re not surprised she’s decided to invoke a DIY spirit. And frankly, we’re more excited than ever to see what she’s going to produce. [The Observer] Keep reading »

Tavi And Jane Pratt To Start “Sassy”-Esque Teen Mag (And You Can Be A Part Of It!)

The media lords hath heard our prayers! If you aren’t already freaking out, you will when you hear this: Fashion blogging sensation Tavi and Jane Pratt (founder and editor of Sassy and Jane mags) are teaming up to create a new teen magazine. Tavi made the announcement on her blog, saying, “You guys may know how I feel about Sassy. You also may know that I’ve been babbling about how I think our generation should get one, too. Jane Pratt, founding editor and then EIC of Sassy, also became aware, and emailed me, and we’ve met a couple times, and it looks like we’re going to start a magazine for an audience of wallflowerly teenage girls.”

People like us have been clamoring for ages for a Sassy revival, and we could see the potential for that to happen with Tavi, but as she wisely points out, “[this magazine] won’t be Sassy (or the rebirth of Sassy, or Sassy 2.0) and nor do we want it to be.” Rather, the publication will “use Sassy as a point of reference for the whole teen-magazine-that-doesn’t-suck thing …” We love how Tavi wants to create something new but still retain the nostalgia for an era that feels creative to us now … Keep reading »

Jane Pratt’s Rough Ride

Jane Pratt used to be my hero, back when I had heroes. She became the youngest Editor-in-Chief ever when she was hired to edit Sassy, the coolest teen mag ever and always, when she was only 24. She then went on to edit, Jane, targeted at 20-something women — both of these magazines, Sassy especially, spoke to women in a way no other women’s magazine had…like smart, funny, sexually empowered human beings. Pratt was profiled in Sunday’s Page Six magazine, discussing her sudden departure from Jane a year-and-a-half before the magazine was shuttered, which came on the heels of a double miscarriage of her twin babies. In the article she talks about bouncing back from those rough couple of years (which also included a breakup with her longtime fiance), moving in with the Arquettes, and hosting her new Sirius Radio Show (Jane, please, have The Frisky on!) — she was also photographed her adorable daughter, Charlotte, who she hopes will never do the drugs and sexual stuff she did when she was a wild Drew Barrymore-and-Michael Stipe-smoochin’ hussy. But…but…that was the Jane who was my hero! [Jane Radio On Sirius] Keep reading »
