Morning Quickies: Jane Fonda Talks Body Image & Bulimia

Jane Fonda photo
  • Jane Fonda opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about her lifelong body image issues. “I wasn’t very happy from, I would say, puberty to 50? It took me a long time,” she told the magazine. “It was in my 40s, and if you suffer from bulimia, the older you get, the worse it gets. It takes longer to recover from a bout. I had a career, I was winning awards, I was supporting nonprofits, I had a family.” Eventually Fonda just had to quit: “I had to make a choice: I live or I die.” She says her father, the actor Henry Fonda, made her feel like her only value was in her appearance. “I was raised in the ’50s,” she said. “I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly. He was a good man, and I was mad for him, but he sent messages to me that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect, you’re not going to be loved.” How sad/fortunate for her that in late adulthood, she has finally found peace with her body. • Palin pile-on redux: Mercede Johnston, sister of Levi Johnston, posed for Playboy and talked smacked about Sarah Palin (of course). “I think she’d have had a mental breakdown [if elected president],” Johnston told the magazine. “As governor she quit on us. What does that say about her?” I don’t disagree on this one, but you still have to consider the source. [NY Post]

Jane Fonda Poses Without Photoshop

What’s that? Wrinkles on the cover of a national magazine? Could it be?!?! Jane Fonda, looking fabulous at 73, posed on the cover of Good Housekeeping (you know, that magazine your grandma reads?) sans airbrushing. “I feel sorry for these young actresses coming up,” Fonda told the magazine, continuing:

“If they have a dimple on their buttock, there’s a close-up of it in some gossip magazine. So there’s a cult of perfection. Consequently all the young people who emulate celebrities think they have to look perfect and that’s so destructive.”

Granted this is observation is coming from a woman with plastic surgery who is famous, in part, for her line of aerobics videos. But hey, I’ll take my feminists in Hollywood where I can get them. [Daily Mail UK] Keep reading »

Quotable: Jane Fonda Fesses Up To Plastic Surgery

“I recently had plastic surgery. It was a hard decision to make, and I decided if I’m going to do it, I’m going to tell the truth. I’m writing a book about aging, so I can’t write that book and not say I’ve had plastic surgery. And you know, I just decided it was for me — I don’t want to have bags under my eyes that make me look tired, and so forth and so on.”

Jane Fonda Releasing New Aerobics Videos At 72

Jane Fonda might be 72, but she still looks darn good in spandex. In late November, she’s releasing two new exercise DVDs called “Jane Fonda Prime Time.” “I’m very excited to be back in the fitness business,” Jane says. “I know from experience and from my research how critical it is for boomers and seniors to be physically active. Even if they’ve never exercised in their lives, now’s the time and my programs are a good, safe way to do it.” But, uh, hi Jane—we 20- and 30-somethings are going to be getting the DVDs, too. I mean, you left us hanging since 1995. Keep reading »

The Frisky’s Top 5 Female Action Heroes In Film

Nothing causes more boners than an action movie — especially when it stars a femme fatale who knows how to handle a gun. Everyone loves a sharp shootin’, straight talkin’ lady whose looks alone could kill, but it’s even better when she’s actually a trained lethal weapon. In honor of the women who inspire us to fight for our rights (and wear something skin tight), here are The Frisky’s Top 5 Female Action Heroes.

5. Jane Fonda as Barbarella She’s bold, she’s blonde, and she won’t take no for an answer. The stylish mod manhandler battles her way through the universe with a dozen outfits and one ray gun. Keep reading »

Barbarella Does It Again

Barbarella is an inter-gallactic sex symbol, a lover and a fighter, and she’s coming back to the big screen! Director Robert Rodriguez, who is known for being Quentin Tarantino’s boy crush and for stylized films like Sin City and Planet Terror, is now taking on the swinging ’60s space odyssey. And he’s going above and beyond to stick to the original — even behind the scenes. Rose McGowan, Rodriguez’s fiancee, has signed on to fill the go-go boots of Jane Fonda, whose husband Roger Vadim directed the original in ‘68. Although filming had been delayed due to the writers’ strike, hopefully the impending Screen Actors Guild strike won’t get in Barbarella’s way. But if there’s one thing we know about the Amazon woman, nothing and no one can stop her! [Media Morgue] Keep reading »
