New York Fashion Week Day 7: Rachel Roy, The Row, J. Crew And More!

Today, J. Crew showed its wares for next season, so you know Amelia was stoked. We swooned, on the other hand, for the new collection from Assembly, which has a real understated cool to it. The Row’s collection of oversized, flowy garments seemed to really reflect the Olsen twins’ personal style. And Rachel Roy’s collection showcased her girly, feminine chic. Check out those collections, along with Badgley Mischka, Betsey Johnson and Sophie Theallet, after the jump!

J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons is one of our longtime much-agreed-upon style crushes. If we could all mix J. Crew with high fashion half as well as she does, the world would be a more colorful, impeccably dressed place. Bitch is magic. She also has some softly-spoken ties to the CFDA — it’s a fairly new tradition for each year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner creates a collaborative line with J. Crew, but it’s a damn good one we hope will continue — so it’s only natural that Ms. Lyons turned out for last night’s awards ceremony. Her signature masculine-feminine approach never fails (this is the woman who wore a white T-shirt over a ball gown to the Met Gala last year with aplomb) to make jaws drop, leaving everyone in the foreseeable radius wondering how she manages to be all at once preppy, chic, eccentric, and transcendentally can’t-put-your-finger-on-it cool. Or maybe that’s just me. (Solange ain’t half bad, either.)

Jenna Lyons is the president and creative director for J. Crew. She’s also sort of a walking, talking embodiment of the brand’s hip preppy vibe. In this video, a clip from the upcoming CNBC documentary, “J. Crew and the Man Who Dressed America,” Jenna talks about how the company must predict what trends will be popular more than a year out. She and J. Crew CEO Mickey Drexler are largely credited with bringing the company back from the brink of failure, and “The Man Who Dressed America,” debuting May 24 chronicles the brand’s auspicious rise.

6 Awesome J. Crew Pieces — On eBay!

I’ve never been much of an eBay shopper; in fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve bought something on the e-retailer. But two of them have been in the last year — and both were brand new J. Crew items. Maybe this isn’t a secret, but it sure as heck was to me — it turns out, there’s a ton of brand new, with tags, J. Crew items being sold on eBay. Why? I’m not entirely sure. I do know that I was incredibly happy with both of my purchases: 1) a winter coat I coveted after seeing it in a movie and 2) a pair of round-toe pumps that I got for $40 less than the retail price. In fact, if I’m coveting anything currently being sold at J. Crew — and, let’s face it, I always am — I check eBay to see if anyone is selling it at a markdown. Plus, eBay is also a great place to check for past favorites that you wish you had snatched up. Here are six awesome J. Crew items you can score on eBay right now.

Cross your fingers — there’s a decent chance that, sometime in the next few weeks, J. Crew and CFDA/Vogue Fund Award winner Joseph Altuzarra (that’s him on the far right, pictured with J. Crew boss Jenna Lyons on the far left) will come forward with news of a collaboration. In fact, the designer might have gotten a little bit loose-lipped by discussing the collab at an event earlier this week. J. Crew has yet to make a formal announcement regarding the capsule collection, so I can’t imagine that they’re happy with Joseph’s decision to unceremoniously spill the beans. Regardless, Altuzarra will join the ranks of Prabal Gurung, jewelry designer Lulu Frost, and Manolo Blahnik, all of whom have collaborated with J. Crew in the past. As far as fast fashion collaborations go J. Crew is particularly high-end, so while the offerings will certainly be less pricy than the runway goods, they’re bound to cost a pretty penny. Still, I look forward to seeing the results and maybe picking up a couple of the pieces. [Racked]

I feel strangely ambivalent in regards to hair accessories. I love the look of them — there’s nothing cuter than a well-placed decorative clip or a contrasting headband accenting a ’60s-style bouffant … on someone else. I own a variety of hair accessories, which I often put on in the morning and end up pulling out right before I leave the house, because as a person with a great amount of nervous energy and an even greater amount of discontentment with my appearance (I’m so much fun), I just can’t seem to keep anything in my hair for longer than an hour or two. That being said, I have some kind of magnetic attraction to floral hair accessories that leads me to buy them and spend far more time debating wearing them and preening in front of the mirror wearing them than actually, you know, wearing them. Seeing as I’m a decidedly un-floral person in most other aspects, it must be the San Franciscan in me that’s drawn to a little flower perched atop a bobby pin — I just can’t help myself. I’m particularly obsessed with the perfect chiffon peonies that J. Crew sells in a million gorgeous colors (in stores only), but how easy would these be to DIY? I’ve never DAM (Done Anything Myself) because I am exceedingly untrustworthy with a hot glue gun, but this is one craft I think I could pull off without a hitch. Would you wear them? Would you wear them all day? If so, you are a far stronger person than I.
