In the past few years, the following celebrities over the age of 35 have given birth to or are expecting twins: Marcia Cross, 44; Jillian Dempsey (wife of Patrick Dempsey), 40; Rebecca Romijn, 36; Jennifer Lopez, 38; Julia Roberts, 37; and Nancy Grace, 50. Angelina Jolie just gave birth to her twins at the age of 33, with Us Weekly claiming that she conceived via in-vitro fertilization (IVF)—a story she and Brad Pitt deny, saying they would have been happy to talk about using IVF, if that had been the case. Of the other women mentioned, none of them have only Marcia Cross has spoken out about using IVF to conceive, and a few others have outright denied it, despite the fact that a woman’s ability to conceive drops significantly after the age of 35.
Happy 30th Birthday in-vitro fertilization! That’s right, it’s a big b-day for anyone conceived via IVF, especially Louise Brown, the world’s first IVF baby. Her parents, Lesley and John, had tried for nine years to have a child (sounds like fun), when they heard about experimental fertility research being conducted at Cambridge University. Physiologist Robert Edwards and gynecologist Patrick Steptoe were pioneering the “test-tube” baby and the Brown’s volunteered to try the controversial method. Three decades later, they’re among many IVF success stories. Over the years, 115,000 babies have been born in the U.S. alone thanks to IVF and just this summer, the fertility miracle helped a 70-year old woman conceive in India! As for Louise, who works as a shipping company administrator, she is a mother herself, to a healthy 18-month-old boy, which she was able to conceive naturally. Her younger sister Natalie Brown is also a notable achievement—she was the first IVF baby to give birth and she too was able to conceive without medical aid. Needless to say, the Brown kids are so grateful to the groundbreaking scientists that they consider them to be their granddads. And thanks to them, now everyone can have eggs scrambled, sunny side up, and even fertilized! [AFP]
It’s a rare man with super sperm that can impregnate a woman when the two of them are in their seventies. The late conservative Senator Strom Thurmond, fathered a child at 74, comedian Charlie Chaplin helped his wife conceive at 73, and abstract artist Picasso made a baby at 68. And all this was before Viagra! Now science has made things possible for any Tom, Dick, and Harry with in-vitro fertilization. Thanks to IVF, Charam Singh, who is in his mid-70’s, and his 70 year-old wife just gave birth to twins over the weekend in India. Congratulations?! So we get why Angelina Jolie wants to spawn over and over again with Brad Pitt, but why on earth would this woman want to take a loan out to pay all the expensive medical bills, not to mention take her va-jane out of retirement? The Panwars already had two daughters and five grandchildren together, but it wasn’t enough for them. They wanted, and finally got, a male heir to pass their family farm onto. Thanks chauvinism!
