I really have no words for this other than I wish I could reach through the screen and give this young man the biggest hug ever. While I am glad to hear him say — or write — that he is strong and is not going anywhere, I certainly hope his parents and school officials are aware of the bullying he faces everyday and are doing something to help him.

  • Kara DioGuardi once ate six pot brownies at Paula Abdul’s house (brought by a friend of Paula’s, she claims!) and got so high she fell out of bed and had to be taken to the hospital, she told “Lopez Tonight.” Yikes. DioGuardi had some terrifying hallucinations from all that THC and needed I.V.s to help her get through them. Poor thing! [New York Daily News]

  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton filmed an “It Gets Better” video in light of recent suicides by LGBT teens. Telling gay young adults “it gets better” might pack more of a punch if she actually supported gay marriage. But the sentiment, albeit hypocritical, is appreciated. [YouTube]
  • Sorry, European ladies, no additional maternity leave for you. Britain is trying to block new European Union laws that would give women more maternity-related benefits. The European Parliament would like to increase paid maternity leave from 14 to 20 weeks, but U.K. pols say it will hurt small businesses and cause employers to not hire pregnant women or women of childbearing age.   • Two cartoons published in the University of Connecticut’s student newspaper are under fire for being offensive and, frankly, unfunny. One shows a man tossing a diamond ring into a bedroom while a desperate-looking woman chases after it, implying a woman will do anything to get married. And the other says, “Forget sugar and spice and everything nice. Try crabs, scabs and everything viral. That’s what girls are really made of.” Ha ha? [CTnow.com]

Hero Of The Day: An “It Gets Better” Video You’ve Got To See

We’ve been hearing a lot about Dan Savage’s incredible “It Gets Better” campaign — and we’re sure you’ve seen tons of “It Gets Better” videos. But this clip from Fort Worth City Councilman Joel Burns is especially moving. In the 10-minute video, Burns eloquently talks about the private pain he felt growing up as a gay teen in Texas. Burns goes on to tell his audience that “even though there may be some political repercussions for telling my story, this story is not just for the adults who might choose or not choose to support me. This story is for the young people who may be holding that gun tonight, or the rope or the pill bottle.” Burns’ story, from one of the most unlikely places, is a prescient and moving gift to gay teens everywhere.
