Iris Apfel's Documentary Trailer

“Dressing should be fun. Life is short and life is grey, so you can easily dress yourself up, make yourself happy, and then you make other people happy.” That’s Iris Apfel,  kooky 90-year-old style icon whose big ol’ bug glasses have become her signature look. Albert Maysles, the filmmaker behind “Grey Gardens,” is filming a documentary about her life and influence on style and this five-minute trailer/promo thing promises it’ll be grand. How many other old ladies do you know with a MAC and QVC line and use words like “hoosegow”? We also get to meet Mr. Iris Apfel, who is adores his wife after all these years. Join the club, buddy.  [Racked]

“I think they could be a little bit more well groomed — if you know what well groomed is, you just take a look in the mirror. Their hair doesn’t look neat, they look like they are all messed up. I don’t think messy is pretty, I think they should study themselves a little more and not wear something that’s in fashion because it’s in fashion. And you see some enormous young women wearing the skimpiest clothing and it really looks dreadful.”

Iris Apfel, the 90-year-old former socialite and fashionista brought to icon status as the subject of Ari Seth Cohen’s “Advanced Style,” always seems to have something negative to say when it comes to “young people’s style” these days … but is she right? Could we all use the refined touch of a hairbrush and some well-tailored trousers? I say, psh. How irreverent would it be for me to say that I think she might be kind of dreadful, and not in the bizarrely delightful sense of the word (see: Karl Lagerfeld)? [Fashionista]

Iris Apfel is the grand dame of quirky, eccentric style. And luxury shoe maker Jimmy Choo wanted to honor Apfel’s signature look by designing a shoe after her. Dubbed the Iris, the five-inch heel will almost certainly never be worn by the diminutive 90-year-old New Yorker. And we’re not sure who else will be picking up a pair either — considering they’re going for $1495 a pop. Do you think Iris digs ‘em? She is a pretty hard sell. [Jimmy Choo]

“You can’t try to be somebody you’re not; that’s not style. If someone says, ‘Buy this, you’ll be stylish,’ you won’t be stylish because you won’t be you. You have to learn who you are first and that’s painful… Now when I walk down Fifth Avenue in the summertime I just want to throw up. It seems that the fatter and uglier people are, the fewer clothes they wear. The shorts and flip-flops and tight jeans on butts that go from here to Poughkeepsie. I always say they should put people in jail for wearing clothes like that. Especially stretch jeans over size 10 — they should be outlawed. Ten years ago people were starting to look like slobs in New York, now it’s an epidemic.”

– Sassy old lady and style guru Iris Apfel doesn’t mince words. True story: Lindsay Lohan once asked Apfel to be her style guru, and she turned La Lohan down. “I can’t tell people how to have style. No amount of money can buy you style. It’s just instinctive.” [Telegraph]

Iris Apfel’s Jewelry Can Now Be Yours

Ninety-year-old designing legend and quirky lady about town, Iris Apfel, cuts such a unique figure, she was offered the opportunity to design not one but two accessories collections last year, for HSN and Alexis Bittar, respectively. Now YOOX.com is getting in on the Apfel love; they’ve commissioned her to create another line of beautiful baubles, priced between $45 for low-end pieces and $2,800 for luxury rhinestone encrusted bracelets, necklaces and rings.
