StreetSafe, a relatively new app for smartphones, claims that for a minimum of $12.50 a month, it will coach you with safety advice in frightening areas on your way to any location. One first feature is called “Walk With Me,” where the user can connect with a Safety Advisor while walking down a street. If the user feels unsafe, the Safety Advisor will stay on the line with you until you have reached your destination. In the event that something does happen to you while on the phone with a Safety Advisor, they will be able to call 911. The second feature is called “Silent Alarm.” If this button is slid when you are in a situation where you cannot talk to a Safety Advisor, StreetSafe will contact the local 911 call center immediately, find your whereabouts using the GPS feature on your phone, and provide your age, physical description and any medical conditions to the authorities that are on their way to rescue you. There’s a new iPhone app called Kate’s Style List that shows each and every one of Kate’s outfits and directs you where to buy them online. App Helps French Mothers Figure Out If Sons Are “Le Gay”

Apparently even French mothers have trouble answering the question “gay or European?” A new smartphone app offers French mothers a questionnaire to help figure out if their sons like sticking their French bread in a warm, buttery croissant … or not. The $2.69 app asks 20 questions which inquire whether their bébé mimics gay stereotypes like enjoying show tunes, dressing well, and eschewing sports. Somewhat more controversially, some questions assume it’s the parents’ “fault” a child is gay, like asking if he had an absent father or the mother was authoritarian growing up. If the questionnaire assesses mama‘s crisply dressed, show-tune loving frog is gay, it tells her to “accept it.” But if he’s just a little, uh, European, the questionnaire reads, “You have nothing to worry about, your son is not gay. So you have a very good chance of being a grandmother with all the joys that brings.” How sensitive. [RFI.fr via The Awl] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: MTV’s New iCondom App Helps You Find Places To Buy Condoms

Today's Lady News
  • MTV’s Staying Alive HIV prevention campaign partnered up with iCondom for a new iPhone app that allows users to search via GPS for places to buy condoms. While I commend MTV commitment to promoting safe sex, I also think it’s stupid to make it seem to adolescents that condoms are hard to find. You can get them at nearly every pharmacy, grocery store, big box store, and even gas station. [Clutch Magazine]

Go Bookless With Wallpaper’s City Guides For iPhone

It’s obvious enough that “old-fashioned” guidebooks won’t help if you’re trying to pack light. No matter what your destination is, there are about a million travel iPhone apps out there for you to choose from, but we prefer Wallpaper’s City Guides. Why? For starters, we prefer to cut down on costs by not depleting our data allowance while abroad. These guides are all packed in there, so you don’t need a 3G network to access the info. And it’s only $3.99, which is less than you’d spend on any book.

Flojuggler: For The Man Who Knows Nothing Is More Terrible Than A Woman’s Period

Men, are periods wreacking havoc on your lives? Everywhere you turn is there a woman eating a pint of Ben & Jerry’s or unwrapping a Tampax? Does this concern you? You never have to be blindsided again by leaving your man-cave only to confront the terror that is menstruation. A website called Flojuggler allows you to chart the periods of the women in your life and set alerts two days in advance of when your girlfriend, your hook-up or even your mom is on the rag.
