Independence Day Inspiration Board: Rosie The Riveter

Rosie the Riveter wasn’t a real person, but she did symbolize a generation of patriotic American women and early feminism. When the U.S. needed workers for factories during WWII, women answered the call, working in shipyards, steel mills, warehouses, etc. Rosie the Riveter was the nickname given to women working in war-time industries at this crucial time. These women, no doubt, helped win the war. Check out our interpretation of Rosie the Riveter’s style after the jump. Keep reading »

Inspiration Board: Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider”

Dennis Hopper broke from Hollywood convention when he co-wrote, directed, and starred in “Easy Rider,” released in 1969, a movie that tells the story of a cross-country motorcycle trip. At that time, he had only appeared on TV and in small movie roles. He made “Easy Rider” for about $1 million, yet it was a box office success and received an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. After a long history as an actor, artist, and photographer, Dennis died May 29 from a long battle with prostate cancer. But let’s remember this original Hollywood bad boy with the movie that made the studios take notice. [Time]

Inspiration Board: “Diff’rent Strokes”

My first thought after reading about Gary Coleman’s passing was “Whatchu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” Even though Gary had some troubles as an adult, I couldn’t help but remember chubby-cheeked Arnold, his character on the ’70s and ’80s show “Diff’rent Strokes.” Then, I thought about the classic urban-American sportswear the young Drummonds and Charlene DuPrey, Janet Jackson‘s character, sported on the show. Arnold loved his football jerseys and sneakers. Willis was mad for plaid. Kimberly kept covered in high-neck blouses. Charlene styled it up with V-neck sweaters. And jeans were a wardrobe staple for all four. After the jump, get inspired by the wardrobe on “Diff’rent Strokes” without looking like a blast from the past. Keep reading »

Inspiration Board: Doris Eaton Travis, Ziegfeld Girl

Doris Eaton Travis, the last Ziegfeld chorus girl, died of an aneurysm Tuesday. She had the distinction of being the youngest member the Ziegfeld Girls ever had, having lied about her age to begin dancing at 14 in 1918. But before she became a chorus girl, Travis and her siblings, “the seven little Eatons,” were celebrated for their stage performances and were familiar with early 20th century celebrities like George Gershwin and Charles Lindbergh. Travis danced with the Ziegfeld Follies for three years, leaving to perform in other stage productions, musical revues, and silent movies. In 1938, she opened and operated an Arthur Murray dance studio in Detroit.

As a chorus girl, Travis was known for wearing lavish chiffon and lace dresses and spectacular headdresses. She and the other Ziegfeld Girls, who were rumored to have measurements of exactly 36-26-38, were glorious spectacles of the American girl in the 1920s, but even in 2010, Travis’ flapper style is achievable and fashionable. Check out the look she inspired after the jump. [NY Times, PopEater] Keep reading »

Awesome news: Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sister duo behind label Rodarte, will be designing two shirts inspired by the classic French New Wave film “Breathless” (French title: “À Bout de Souffle”). We’re so pumped to see what the two come up with when the tops hit stores a bit later this season; one of them will be based on Jean Seberg’s iconic New York Herald Tribune shirt. To satisfy our excitement while we wait for their debut, we’ve put together an Inspiration Board based on the ’60s Parisian style brought to life by one of Godard’s best films.
