Style Inspiration: Michelle Obama’s Hearts And Stripes

This weekend, the Barack Obama Facebook page posted this picture of the first couple attending a Veteran’s Day ceremony. My friend Molly immediately sent me the link along with the message, “What is Michelle wearing?! I want it!” I did some sleuthing (and by “sleuthing” I mean I went to the awesome website “Mrs. O,” which tirelessly chronicles all of Michelle’s fashion choices, and typed in “striped sweater”) and found out the photo is actually from last year, and the divine Miss O’s sweater is a Sonia Rykiel creation that’s no longer available. Sad, yes, but I found three other fabulous sweaters that feature hearts and stripes, and the best part? They’re all less than 100 bucks. Get the shopping details after the jump! Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Kalinda From “The Good Wife”

One night during our weekend in Nashville, my boyfriend Nick and I staggered back to our hotel in the rain after eating a huge meal. We immediately collapsed on the bed, and Nick reached for the remote. Nick has a habit of watching the most random TV shows whenever we’re staying in a hotel, and this time he didn’t disappoint: he flipped through the channels and finally settled on a half-over rerun of “The Good Wife.” “Nick, come on!” I objected, “We’ve never even seen a full episode of this show!” But by the time I had finished my sentence I’d been sucked into the legal drama, and 20 minutes later we were like, “Cool! Let’s watch this all the time!”

The show is overflowing with rich, fashionable lawyers, but one of my favorite characters (and wardrobes) is Kalinda, a private investigator who favors dark leather and military details. I found a few Kalinda-inspired pieces to add some edge to your fall look. Shopping details after the jump! Keep reading »

Halloween Costume Inspiration: Jayne Mansfield

First there was Marilyn, and then there was Jayne. Busty, (bottle) blonde, and ribald, Mansfield became known as the “Working Man’s Monroe” for both her physical likeness to Norma Jeane and her own brand of salacious, exaggeratedly sexual appeal. “Hollywood’s smartest dumb blonde” had a genius IQ and was fluent in five languages, but she knew full well that the public didn’t care about her brains; rather, they were far more interested in her 40-21-35 dimensions.

A pledged member ― the High Priestess, in fact ― of Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan, it was rumored that Jayne sold her soul for fame and fortune and suffered the consequences: a grisly car accident death that saw the stunning young actress and American sex symbol nearly decapitated, while her three children under the age of 5, including her now-famous daughter, Mariska Hargitay, looked on from the backseat. Beautiful, brilliant, bizarre: Mansfield lives on as one of the most fascinating pop figures of the last century. Whatever you do, don’t forget a touch of pink. Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Nashville Right Now

I spent the weekend in Nashville, listening to bluegrass jam bands, googling “Where do Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman hang out?” and eating way more BBQ than any human being should consume in such a short time period. It was glorious. I loved the city, and was totally inspired by the fashion, which is such a fun mix of feminine southern belle style and edgier, trendy pieces. Read on to find out how to get the Nashville look for yourself… Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Inspiration: Summer Camp

I’m not a big fan of summer camp. Probably because the one time I went to summer camp every other camper in my cabin got violently ill, I had to deflect projectile vomit with my sleeping bag, the counselors vaguely accused me of poisoning everyone, and–unrelated but just as tragic–my favorite soccer shorts got swept down the river, never to be seen again. Whether your camp memories are positive, negative, or nonexistent, it’s easy to appreciate the laid back style of this summer tradition. Get the camp-y look for yourself, after the jump! Style Inspiration: Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor has long been on our style inspiration radar, but her memory is more alive than ever now what with that trainwreck Lindsay Lohan depicting her in a très highbrow Lifetime film. The horror! Elizabeth (who actually loathed being called Liz) was, unlike Lindsay, shambolic in the best way possible, the hottest mess that ever lived. She was a genetic mutant born with double rows of eyelashes, a violet-eyed lush and lover who was famous for her roles, her romances, and her prevailing kindness. Let’s not forget her fashion influence: she helped to bring Valentino and Halston into demand, and when she passed away last year, her jewelry collection was rumored to be worth well over $150 million. They just don’t make movie stars like Elizabeth anymore. Keep reading »

Mother’s Day Style Inspiration Board: Gillian Darmody

Mother's Day
Everything you need to celebrate mom. Read More »

As far as mothers go, Gillian Darmody isn’t the best, but she’s certainly the most manipulative. This gangster moll was just a teenager when she was impregnated by the biggest political boss in the sordid snow-globe world of Prohibition-era Atlantic City. Fast forward twenty-five years and she’s the matriarch responsible for Jimmy Darmody, who is following in his illegitimate father’s footsteps as a hard and fast crook while his young mother continues her career as a showgirl and occasional mistress. What follows is a twisted web of scandal, sex, slaughter, and deceit, complete with an Oedipal love triangle and beyond. Gillian Darmody is one shady lady, but she has the kind of wardrobe that would drive any self-respecting flapper-lovin’ woman wild. After the jump, a few pieces to get you into the dancing mood, alcohol restriction and incest notwithstanding. Wear these individually to avoid the dreaded “Halloween costume” effect. Keep reading »

Smack dab in the middle of wet, cold February might not seem like the ideal time for exploring the great outdoors, but if you’re looking for a memorable Valentine’s Day experience, throw on a coat and drag your sweetheart outside. Whether you take a walk through a park, hit up a hiking trail, skip stones on a raging river (good luck), or brave a stormy beach, you’ll be in for an adventure, and you won’t have to worry about fighting the crowds at Olive Garden. Jump in puddles, take pictures, get thoroughly cold and uncomfortable, then head home and get warm together (if you know what I mean).
