Doris Eaton Travis, the last Ziegfeld chorus girl, died of an aneurysm Tuesday. She had the distinction of being the youngest member the Ziegfeld Girls ever had, having lied about her age to begin dancing at 14 in 1918. But before she became a chorus girl, Travis and her siblings, “the seven little Eatons,” were celebrated for their stage performances and were familiar with early 20th century celebrities like George Gershwin and Charles Lindbergh. Travis danced with the Ziegfeld Follies for three years, leaving to perform in other stage productions, musical revues, and silent movies. In 1938, she opened and operated an Arthur Murray dance studio in Detroit.
As a chorus girl, Travis was known for wearing lavish chiffon and lace dresses and spectacular headdresses. She and the other Ziegfeld Girls, who were rumored to have measurements of exactly 36-26-38, were glorious spectacles of the American girl in the 1920s, but even in 2010, Travis’ flapper style is achievable and fashionable. Awesome news: Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sister duo behind label Rodarte, will be designing two shirts inspired by the classic French New Wave film “Breathless” (French title: “À Bout de Souffle”). We’re so pumped to see what the two come up with when the tops hit stores a bit later this season; one of them will be based on Jean Seberg’s iconic New York Herald Tribune shirt. Honestly, I have no plans to see “A Nightmare on Elm Street” when it’s released April 30 because Freddie Krueger has scared the crap out of me since I was age 8. Rihanna stepped on to the Nickelodeon orange carpet at the Kids’ Choice Awards wearing a Dior number that reminds us of a candy striper. Although we think she messed with fashion perfection by over-padding her shoulders, we were able to create a similar outfit for way less than Rihanna’s original.
